Reserve gain confidence boost with point against Sterry Cup holders

Chris Green31 Jan 2016 - 12:30

The Ressies continued their improved form with a well earned point at Sterry Cup champs, Acle

Wroxham made a bright start but the first real chance fell to Acle when Josh Knights brought a fine save from Kingsley Barnes. Then a cross from the left hit the post and fell for Sam Whting who seemed certain to score but Barnes pulled off a point blank save to deny him.
Wroxham’s best chance fell to Shaun Taylor who headed over a good cross from Matt Doyle on 25 minutes. A strong wind was providing Acle with an advantage along with some long throws by Jason Cole. A free bullet header by Ian Morgan from a corner also went just wide as Acle maintained their control but Wroxham were defending well.
The visitor’s felt aggrieved when Jordan Attree was brought down with the Assistant flagging for a foul but referee Ryan Thurbin dismissed the appeals.
A mistake by Mac Gee was almost punished as he tried to usher the ball out of play but ex-Wroxham player Aaron Sanders gained the advantage to set up Bryant whose shot was brilliantly saved by Barnes.
Wroxham rode their luck somewhat and relied on some solid defending as well as good saves from Barnes. They looked to be heading into the interval on level terms but went behind seconds before the half time whistle when a defensive mistake allowed Bryant a shot on goal which was palmed away by Barnes but only into the path of Josh Knights who blasted into the net.
A good shot by Jack Lincoln at the start of the second half was well blocked by another for Yachtsman Scott Cruickshank.
Then Wroxham had a real chance to equalise when Matt Doyle set up Ollie Ebbage who only had to slide the ball in the net but somehow dragged his outstretched effort wide of an open goal from less than 5 yards out.
But Wroxham were now beginning to gain some confidence and a superb shot from Shaun Howes was brilliantly turned over by Cruickshank.
Such was the control they were having that Acle made a double substitution to stem the flow. The young Yachtsmen deservedly equalised in the 67th minute when Mac Gee turned in Jack Lincoln’s corner.
Then a great shot from Jordan Attree found the net to give Wroxham what seemed like the lead but the officials combined to overrule a perfectly good goal for offside.
Wroxham continued to pile on the pressure looking little like a side in the bottom two as they dominated the Sterry Cup holders who were restricted to breakaways with sub Tyler Curran creating a couple of chances which were easily dealt with.
The visitors continued to create chances up to the final whistle and were unfortunate not to take all three points as was apparent from the comments heard from the Acle manager in their post match huddle. This was a well earned pint and should give the side a confidence boost ahead of their Mummery Cup semi-final against Caister next Saturday.
