Beavers have final say

Beavers have final say

Chris Green1 Nov 2015 - 16:58

For the third week running the reserves lost a high scoring game by the odd goal.

Three goals in the opening 9 minutes set the stall out for a very open game. Without a 1st team game Wroxham resisted the temptation to strengthen up and only Matt Halliday was added to the team against a Blofield side who put seven past St Andrews last week. Wroxham started brightly with some slick raids that had Blofield defending in numbers. But after a slow start, the Beavers took the lead on 5 minutes. Alex Philpott lost the ball in mid-field and with the rest of the Wroxham defence high up the field, this resulted in a breakaway for Blofield with Jamie Smith receiving the ball in what looked an offside position but he carried on to draw Kingsley Barnes off his line enabling Smith to pick his spot with a low shot beyond the Wroxham ‘keeper.
The home side almost added a second from a corner when James Basey-Fisher climbed high at the far post to head down but narrowly wide.
They did soon after with more poor defending by Wroxham enabling Alex ....to hit a loose ball high in the roof of the net from 8 yards after 8 minutes to give Blofield a 2 goal lead.
Wroxham responded straight away though when Ben Anderson went on a weaving run to square the ball for Danny Rogers to lift his side foot shot in the net and pull a goal back after 8 minutes.
The visitors started to get their game going but once again fell asleep on 19 minutes when the experienced Kris Hart got forward to get in a cross for Smith who had a free shot that fortunately he sliced wide.
More sloppy defending enabled Blofield to extend their lead on 29 minutes. A cross from the right which should have been cleared fell for ....who swept the ball in the net.
Wroxham held on until half-time without any further damage but now their play was breaking down with poor passing and players seemingly unable to hold their feet on a tricky surface.

The Wroxham management took off Tom Rampling at half-time who may have had others things on his mind with an England U17 trial on Sunday. He was replaced by Ed Abery. Wroxham were lucky to escape going further behind as Blofield found the net again but the officials decided it was from an offside position.
This gave Wroxham a lift and on 50 minutes they finally had a stroke of luck when more dismal defending but this time from the home side, saw a loose ball fall to Marcus Wilkinson in the six yard box and he shot home to reduce the arrears.
But Blofield were still proving to be dangerous albeit on the counter attack as Jamie Smith outpaced Shaun Taylor to shoot across goal and narrowly wide of the far post.
Wroxham were now playing much better and with Blofield players standing off Ben Anderson went on a run to open a position where he was able to shoot but as he was about to do so, the ball bobbled up and his shot was way over.
A good run by Wilkinson on 75 minutes set up Rogers whose shot was blocked as was the follow-up from sub Matty Doyle.
Wroxham eventually got an equaliser their play deserved on 80 minutes when following good work by Bradley Spooner, he found Doyle who set up Rogers to find the net with a firm finish.
It looked then as if the visitors could go on to get more than just a draw but further sloppy defending enabled former Yachtsman Ashley Mitchell to wriggle his way forward and set up Smith who fortunately sliced over.
A good effort from Doyle which looked like it might head into the top corner was plucked from the air by Hemmings.
Then another mistake allowed Mitchell sight of goal and his shot was brilliantly tuned round by Kingsley Barnes. But the former Wroxham player showed his skill on 88 minutes with a winner. Blofield again countered after Wroxham lost the ball going forwards and Mitchell ran on to sqeeze the ball through Barnes’s legs.
There was hardly enough time to do anything more as Wroxham were unlucky not to get something from the game.
