Reserves rue missed chances

Chris Green11 Jan 2015 - 17:18

Wroxham reserves were left to rue some first half chances which could have won this game and stop the rot that has seen them slide down the table.

The young Yachtsmen looked good in the first half and thoroughly deserved the lead given them by Matt Doyle but were unable to add to this despite several clear chances.
After some heavy rain mid-morning the weather cleared up to be bright and sunny with the pitch in good order. Wroxham started confidently and looked much stronger than in their last game before Xmas at Cromer.
They were getting forward in numbers with Sam Harty being a great influence in mid-field. However they were unable to break down a strong CEYMS defence although a header hit the post and cross bar before being cleared. Other chances also went begging.
They finally made the breakthrough in the 27th minute when a lovely pass set Matt Doyle away and he ran on to slide the ball past the on-coming 'keeper for the opening goal.
At the other end Ollie Sutton made a great save to deny CEYMS an equaliser. Then Wroxham had another chance but the shot was slashed over with the goal gaping.
Wroxham had been on top for most of the half but 4th place CEYMS looked dangerous on the counter towards the end of the half.

Wroxham continued to have the better chances at the start of the second half but Doyle was unable to finish when again well placed. They were made to pay for their poor finishing on 60 minutes when a long ball to the far post saw Wroxham defenders ball watching as Ross Stanton's downward header left Sutton with no chance.
The home side had a chance to regain the lead when Danny Rogers got clear but the CEYMS 'keeper got down to deny him.
Again Wroxham were made to pay on 75 minutes with an almost repeat of the first goal by the visitors. This time substitute Darrem Smith was well positioned at the far post to direct a long ball past Sutton with another downward header. This knock the stuffing out of the young Wroxham players as CEYMS were lifted and Sutton had to to be alert with another good save to stop a 3rd goal for the visitors. CEYMS continued to cause problems as a good pass from Stanton set up No 6 who shot straight at Sutton.
In the final analysis Wroxham should have put the game to bed but were made to regret chances which came their way and they went down to their 7th consecutive defeat. But there were some encouraging signs and with Sheringham also losing they may still be able to close the gap that is opening up.
