Sutton the hero

Chris Green20 Sep 2014 - 20:18

Ollie Sutton saved the day by scoring the winner in a penalty shoot out to enable Wroxham Res to progress in the Mummery Cup.

Wroxham Reserves progressed to the next round of the Mummery Cup against league leaders Long Stratton but required a penalty shoot out to do so.
Wroxham took the lead through Jon Abbott only for Stratton to equalize midway through the second half. While there were a number of chances at either end there were no further goals at ninety minutes and a further 30 minutes extra time. Ollie Sutton was the hero for Wroxham saving the first penalty in the shoot out and then scoring with the last kick as they went through 5-4.
The young Yachtsmen taking a break from league action started brightly against the high-flying home side. Matty Doyle should have done better with an early run into the penalty area but went for glory instead of squaring to two well placed colleagues.
The home side had a couple of chances through Nick Davis and had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. Mark Applegate also had a free header which he put wide.
Cain Eagleton received a caution as Stratton pressed forward and Wroxham were being caught out by set pieces. However they took the lead on 20 minutes when Doyle again got to the byline and this time he did square a perfect pass for Jon Abbott to side foot into the roof of the net.
Wroxham had a chance to increase the lead when Jordan Attree took the ball away from the keeper to set up Aaron Sanders whose goal bound effort was blocked.
Chris Bartrum was booked for a nasty foul on Tylan Curran and was lucky to stay on the pitch as play become a little ragged without any finesse.
A shot from Attree was blocked by the keeper who recovered to save from Sanders. Then a shot from Applegate at the other end hit the post with Sutton beaten. Attree was booked for a robust challenge but Wroxham just about deserved their half-time lead.

Stratton danger man Rhys Logan set up Davis at the start of the second half but he side footed wide. Applegate also shot wide but it was clear that the home side were stepping up the tempo with Wroxham needing to defend sometimes not very prettily.
Stratton equalised on 64 minutes from a corner. The ball was cleared to substitute Charlie Deakin who fired a low shot past an unsighted Sutton to level.
Wroxham came back through Luke Priestly who hit a good shot from 20 yards which the keeper did well to turn round diving to his right.
Apart from that chances were at a premium as the game edged towards extra time.
Stratton had the best chance in the 30 minutes extra when Logan burst through but shot straight at Sutton. Otherwise it seemed clear the game would go to a shoot out.
Sutton gave Wroxham a boost by saving the first shot which was too close to him but after that it went with the spot takers. Then Sutton was given the opportunity to win it for Wroxham which he did by calmly slotting into the bottom corner.
