Reserves fight back after injury to Pope

Reserves fight back after injury to Pope

Chris Green31 Aug 2014 - 16:04

This game was marred by an injury to Wroxham’s Sol Pope requiring paramedic support and spoiled an otherwise enjoyable game that ended 2-2.

Blofield through two defensive mistakes scored twice in the first half with Wroxham fighting back to equalise in the second period.

After an even start, The Beavers created the first good chance when Jordan King lost the ball in midfield and Ollie Sutton made a good stop to deny Steve Burdett. Wroxham’s best chance came when Tim Cary set up Cain Eagleton who shot over. Then Sam Harty tried with an effort from long range which went well over. After 25 minutes Harty tricked his way in the penalty area but scuffed his chance and shot tamely at Jackson. The Beavers keeper immediately released the ball to Peter Nobbs who played a long ball forward and as the ball bounced over Sol Pope, Burdett ceased on the opportunity to lob over Sutton. After a good spell the Beavers extended their lead with an unfortunate goal for the visiting team after 44 minutes. Morgan dispossessed King, Burdett challenged the two central defenders Ollie Ebbage and Sol Pope and as Sutton charged into the mix, the ball broke for Burdett to roll the ball gently into the empty net. However it soon became clear that Pope would require medical attention having fallen unconscious for a time. In the absence of our own physio, Blofield’s Martin Plumstead provided first aid before the emergency service paramedics arrived to take over. Jack Houghton meanwhile came on to replace Pope.
Half Time: 2-0
The Wroxham lads were upset by the injury to their colleague but carried on and nine minutes into the second period pulled a goal back. There was a slice of good fortune when Harty’s shot took a deflection into the far corner of the net. This goal however changed the game as Wroxham were now on the front foot. Ex-Wroxham player Matt Banham had to make a vital interception to stop the young Yachtsmen scoring again. Then a superb ball in from Tyler Curran in space on the left saw Andy Jackson get down to make a block but Jordan King lifted his shot over the bar when it looked easier to score.
Wroxham made a further change with Marcus Wilkinson on to replace Elliot Wesby. The game was wide open now making it a good spectacle. When Curran conceded a free kick on the right, Banham’s cross found Burdett’s but the ball fell well for Sutton to take. Wroxham were getting their passing going and levelled on 65 minutes when a flowing move Marcus Wilkinson on the right wing. He turned inside to hit a tremendous shot that flew over Jackson into the far corner of the net for the equaliser. In response, The Beavers brought on the tall Dan Wynne who soon set up Burdett for Ollie Sutton to again make a good save.
Jordan King got behind Banham as he burst through but shot straight at Jackson.
Blofield again stepped up their game and had a good chance when a cross reached Wynne but he was unable to direct his header which went wide.
Wroxham had a free-kick for a foul on King and as Harty stepped over the ball, Cain Eagleton’s shot went narrowly wide.
At the final whistle, the Wroxham player’s immediate response was to see how their colleague was and fortunately he was now sitting up although still very dazed.
