Another one that got away

Another one that got away

Chris Green22 Dec 2013 - 09:26

Wroxham will reflect on this game as another one they should have won but are now looking over their shoulders at the teams below who are closing in.

After taking a deserved half-time lead with a headed goal from Jordon Attree and one of the best performances of the season so far, they fell to two second half goals by Kirkley & Pakefield who must have wondered how they took the points.
Wroxham started very brightly prompted by some good play by Ross Durrant. Durrant one of the senior players, is returning to form after a lay-off and he went close with a 20 yard shot on 10 minutes that was turned round by home keeper Alan Anderson for a corner. He then took the resulting corner which fell to Armando Alves whose shot was well saved by Anderson.
Then Durrant had another good chance turning inside his marker to get in a shot which looked promising but ended up high over the bar. In the next move Durrant shot straight at the keeper when well placed.
A goal had been threatening and it came on 20 minutes with a lovely cross from Danny Rust to set up a free header for Jordon Attree who glanced the ball into the bottom corner.
Wroxham with the benefit of the wind behind them were in command and their own keeper Robert Juhasz did not have a shot to save.
Kirkley came alive just before half-time when Tom Shilling’s shot was turned round but that was virtually the only shot they had on target in the whole of the half.
Danny Self’s long range snap shot also went close but drifted away at the last moment and the watching supporters were left wondering whether the one goal advantage would be enough despite the commanding display.

With Kirkley benefitting from the wind in the second half, the half-time team talk concentrated on continuing the first half display and restricting the home side to long range shots by holding a high line.
This paid off for quite some time but as the wind picked up, so did the home side. Ricci Butler showed some of his potential with a long range effort that almost dipped under the bar although Wroxham still looked comfortable and had a couple of close efforts themselves from Attree and Luke Priestley. The turning point came after Durrant had to hobble off following a hefty challenge.
Kirkley then found more gaps and when Michael Tacon got round Shaun Howes to get in a volley towards the near post as Juhasz was called upon to make virtually his first real save. Wroxham were forced on the back foot and Kirkley levelled on 70 minutes when Butler’s cross found Alex Holmes who scored at the second attempt. Almost straight away, the home side took the lead with another 35 yarder from Butler which this time hit the top corner giving Juhasz no chance. Butler almost had another but his effort was disallowed for offside.
Despite going close a couple of times, Wroxham were unable to get back in the game as the points went to the home side.
