Sterry Cup holders get lucky

Sterry Cup holders get lucky

Chris Green29 Sep 2013 - 19:35

The scoreline suggests a straight forward win for Sterry Cup holders Acle but it was anything but with Wroxham enjoying most of the possession and missing numerous chances while the home side scored from opportunities they were given.

The Yachtsmen continued their poor run of results but deserved to get something from this game.
Wroxham started on the attack only for Acle to score first on eight minutes. They broke away down the right with Adam Hipperson out-pacing Danny Rust to turn in the box onto his left foot and hit a low shot which squeezed past Olly Sutton at the near post.
Despite the setback, Wroxham continued on top as Pedro Sanha broke through to get in a left foot shot that was turned onto the side netting by Scott Foreman. From the resulting corner Rio Starking's header hit the post before being cleared. Then Chris Sutton released Jack Smith who got in a cross and again Sanha’s shot was blocked and cleared but only as far as Jordon King who hit a great volley which was inches wide of the top corner.
Wroxham had the majority of play but just required too many touches instead of testing Foreman. Frustration started to creep in and Jack Smith was booked for dissent after the referee had made a mistake.

The second half followed the same pattern with Wroxham doing most of the attacking and Acle soaking up the pressure. Wroxham really should have equalised when Jack Smith was clean through with only Foreman to beat but he scooped his shot over the bar. Then Danny Boswell on his return had an even better chance but Foreman dived to make an instinctive save in his midriff to stop a goal bound effort.
Wroxham made substitutions which seemed ineffective as Acle stepped up their game in the final 15 minutes. They were rewarded in the 89th minute when former Yachtsman Ollie Savage got free and he hit a lovely shot over Sutton which came off the underside of the bar and over the line.
