Another three points on the road for the Reserves after a slow start

Another three points on the road for the Reserves after a slow start

Chris Green17 Feb 2013 - 17:24

Wroxham Reserves deservedly took all three points at Mattishall with a competant display to win 3-0

Wroxham took a while to get going after a months enforced break. A much changed Mattishall side were on top from the start and had a good chance to take the lead on five minutes when Cain Eagleton’s misplaced clearance header fell straight to Joe Edwards whose firm shot was well taken by Luis Tibbles.
Then on 15 minutes Rio Starkings sliced the ball behind for a corner and Ben Gilkes header over. Another good Mattishall move down the right on 17 minutes saw Jake Anema whip in a cross for Chris Gibbins whose clipped shot hit the side netting.
Wroxham’s best move came after 30 minutes - from it came the opening goal. Ben Jones played the ball forward to Paul Cook on the edge of the Mattishall area and Cook back-heeled for Jones to continue his run and get in a shot which was forced behind for a corner. Angelo Harrop’s cross presented Cook with a free header which he planted in the top of the net.
Mattishall should have equalised almost straight away when Anema was clean through but shot wildly over the bar.
Wroxham started to take control with some neat passing and again Jones and Cook combined with the latter getting in a shot which Harry Seven in the Mattishall goal did well to stop. But the ball was parried away only as far as Chris Sutton who showed his class with the keeper grounded by lobbing straight back into an empty net.
Again Mattishall fought back and had the ball in the net only to be cancelled by the assistant’s flag for offside.

Wroxham continued with their passing game but things got a bit niggly as several players confronted each other as it appeared there may have been a head butt. Referee Nigel Howes calmed things by taking two bookings, one for each side.
Mattishall were trying desperately to get back in the game but were denied by an excellent save by Tibbles diving to his left to turn round a shot from George Gagen.
As Wroxham held on they brought their substitutes on - Jordan Attree replaced Payton Swatman and Jack Guyton made his senior debut replacing Ben Jones. This paid off as they scored a third goal to settle the game when Jack Smith set up Cook to ram home his second goal and the visitors third.
Wroxham almost had a fourth before the end when Cook set up another sub Matty Doyle whose shot was blocked.
This was a good team performance and deservedly, Wroxham took the three points to keep in touch with the leaders. Next Saturday is a trip to bottom side Hempnall.
