Wroxham beat Beavers in penalty shoot-out

Wroxham beat Beavers in penalty shoot-out

Chris Green1 Sep 2012 - 20:38

Wroxham met last season’s runners-up Blofield and progressed to the 2nd round of the Mummery Cup with a 5-4 win on penalties after the sides were level 3-3 at fulltime and 20 mins extra-time.

The visitors included Andrew Plummer in goal with Ben Thompson making his first appearance of the season after a knee injury and Ross Durrant also playing.
Plummer was called into action early as he palmed away a free-kick from Matty Banham. Wroxham took the lead on 10 mins when Joe Marsden’s cross found Ben Thompson who beat home keeper Danny Lloyd to the ball and headed home.
The lead was not held for long as a punt from Darren Cox set Danny McKail off on a chase and he got to the ball before Plummer who had rushed from his goal. The Blofield player skipped around the Wroxham keeper and from a narrow angle way out on the right he shot into an unguarded net.
A good run by Sam Harty saw the mid-fielder open up to get in a shot from the edge of the area which was just wide then Thompson beat the offside trap but Lloyd came out to narrow the angle as the Wroxham player shot over.
Then Wroxham gave away another stupid goal as Rio Starkings pulled down ex-Wroxham colleague Ashley Mitchell inside the box and referee Ricky Owen had no hesitation in awarding a penalty which McKail converted for his second goal of the game.
The goal rush did not stop there as a mistake by Blofield full-back Kris Hart lacked pace and was punished by Joe Marsden who slotted past the keeper.
A minute later on 35 minutes a Mitchell cross which should have been an easy take was fumbled by Plummer allowing James Bulman to tap into an empty net.
In the 36th minute Wroxham were level again as Thompson was held back by Banham when about to burst through and Wroxham were awarded a free-kick just outside the area which was taken by Joe Marsden with a low shot straight past the home defensive wall giving Lloyd no chance.

Wroxham brought on Jordan Attree and Aaron Sanders at half-time for Thompson and Ross Durrant. Young Sanders who scored a hatrick against North Walsham in midweek almost scored again when Marsden's cross was tipped into his path by Lloyd but the Wroxham youngster’s shot trickled past the post.
Plummer then made up for his earlier mistakes with two blinding saves to deny Bulman and Ben Morgan.
A great run by Marsden opened up the Blofield defence but he shot wide.
Another good save from Plummer stopped a strong shot from Morgan going in as the game then went into 20 minutes extra-time. There were very few chances during this period as referee Owen brought proceedings to a halt and the dreaded penalties.
Both sides converted the first four penalties but when Ashley Mitchell’s spot kick was well saved by Plummer it only needed Wroxham's Ben Lewis to convert, which he did, for the young Yachtsmen to progress to round 2 where they now play Caister away.
