Reserves held to a draw

Chris Green11 Apr 2012 - 22:14

Wroxham Reserves paid for some extravagant missed chances as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Beccles Town

The opening 15 minutes were a little jaded and it was not until the 18th minute that there was any action of note when Kai Hewitt in goal for Wroxham neatly tipped over a long range shot. On 23 minutes Ashley Mitchell’s shot was cleared off the line as Wroxham started to raise their game.
Luke Thacker set up Jamie George on 24 mins and the Wroxham striker lobbed the on-rushing Beccles keeper but was just over. Then Thacker’s 25 yard shot was well saved by Cable.
Beccles took the lead on 25 mins in bizarre circumstances. The ball was punt punted forward and should have been a routine clear-up for Damain Hilton but for some reason, he left it and it sailed over Hewitt who was well off his line. As the ball trickled towards goal, Luke bailey tapped in just to be sure.
Wroxham ought to have equalised almost straight away when Dunthorne pulled the ball back for Jamie George who missed an open goal. The young Yachtsmen were playing some nice football and deservedly got themselves on level terms with a spectacular 30 yard strike from Shaun Dunthorne on 34 mins.
More chances followed but Wroxham were unable to add to the score before the break. Their best effort was when Thacker and George combined for the latter to turn sharply and hit a left foot shot that was only a whisker wide.

The second half livened up midway through when Hewitt punched the ball away straight to former Wroxham player Damon Bensley who showed he still has a sharp eye for goal by promptly placing the ball back in the net.
Wroxham made substitutions and equalised again on 65 mins when Luke Thacker latched onto a fine pass from Ali Durrant to run on and rifle past Cable.
Thacker then almost scored again receiving a lovely pass from sub Sam Campbell he struck the ball first time and Cable made a brilliant one handed save to deny him.
Wroxham should have gone ahead in an almighty goalmouth sramble with several attempts to cross the line but the ball just wouldn’t go in.
In the closing minutes they almost paid for their profligacy when Ray Masters shot for Beccles clipped the bar and in the end had to settle for a point.
