Matthews penalty heroics ensure the Yachtsmen progress in the League Cup

Matthews penalty heroics ensure the Yachtsmen progress in the League Cup

Tom Joyce24 Nov 2012 - 10:00

On Loan Norwich City Goalkeeper, Remi Matthews, made two good penalty shoot out saves to see the Yachtsmen through in the Cup.

Wroxham made 6 changes to the side which was narrowly defeated by Cheshunt in the League on Saturday, giving a few of their U21 and first team players, who haven't been getting regular first team football, a chance to impress. The Yachtsmen also welcomed back Ben Jones from his one month loan spell at Norwich United.

Wroxham started with a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Joe Marsden and Jack Smith playing as the two wing players, and Ben Thompson playng as the lone striker.

It took a little while for both teams to find their ground, with neither side being able to keep the ball for long periods in the first 20 minutes or so. Wroxham had a couple of free kicks early on, midway inside the Needham half, but Gavin Lemmon's deliveries were over hit on both occasions.

Needham Market had a chance to take the lead on 7 minutes when a defensive mistake by Matt Halliday let Sam Newson in, but Halliday's defensive team mates covered well and prevented the visitors from taking an early lead.

On 9 minutes, Newson attemted to lob Remi Matthews from midway in the Wroxham half, but the Wroxham goalkeeper was well aware of the No. 9s idea and made a comfortable catch.

Roscoe Hipperson's short back pass on 16 minutes worried Wroxham and their supporters for a few seconds, but again his team mates done their defensive roles well and were on hand to prevent Needham from capatilising on Hipperson's error.

There was not much between the two teams for the next 10 minutes, with both teams equalling possession. Neither side were able to make the most of the space being created in middle of the park due to the width which was being drawn on the pitch from both sides. Ben Thompson's effort on 17 minutes was the only attempt on goal worth noting, although his right footed shot did not test Needham's goalkeeper.

Needham's Kieron Leabon took out Gavin Lemmon, who was playing a holding midfielder role, on 26 minutes and was lucky to get away with only a word from the referee. Gavin Lemmon took the resulting free kick but his delivery in to the box was easily dealt with by the Needham defence.

Another defensive mistake by Roscoe Hipperson nearly let in Needham on 27 minutes, with Hipperson miss timing a header. But the Yachtsmn defence were on hand again to clear the danger.

Wroxham then stepped up a notch and on the half hour started to play a lot better football, knocking the ball around in the midfield nicely, and making good use the their two wide players which had not really been involved for th first 29 minutes.

Then on 31 minutes, Ross Durrant came the closest to scoring in the first 45, with the midfielder playing a nice little one-two with young Jack Smith before taking a touch and hitting a low hard drive at the Needham goal, and forcing a good save out of goalkeeper Louis Johnson.

Wroxham kept the pressure on and on 36 minutes Durrant picked the ball up on the left before delivering a decent cross to winger Joe Marsden, who was present in at the back of the area, but was only able to direct his header back across goal where no Wroxham player was present to put the ball home.

Wroxham continued to push forward well, and Durrant, who was becoming a real handful for Needham, had another attempt from the edge of the area and produce another good save from Johnson, who tipped Durrant's effort around the post for a corner on 42 minutes.

Marsden then played a neat one-two with Smith a minute later, before delivering a low cross across the face of the goal but unfortunately there was no Wroxham player on hand to get on the end of Marsden's delivery.

HT - Wroxham 0-0 Needham Market

Needham's Newson received a booking early on at the start of the second half for a late challenge on Wroxham defender Josh Carus.

Wroxham were forced in to a change on 50 minutes as Roscoe Hipperson who appeared to feel a slight strain in his leg and was replaced by Remi Gordon at left back, as a matter of precaution.

Needham were the liveliest of the two sides at the start of the second half and on 51 minutes the ever threatening Sam Newson had a good shot on goal well blocked by Josh Carus.

The visitors continued to put pressure on Wroxham and on 54 minutes a mix up between Remi Matthews and Central Defender Matt Halliday resulted in both players missing the ball. The ball bounced towards goal and would have been in the back of the net if substitute Remi Gordon was not on hand to clear the ball of the line.

The Yachtsmen made their second change of the evening on 57 minutes with Matt Blake coming on for Joe Marsden, who had a fair run out for the Yachtsmen on the wing. Blake coming on to partner Thompson up front.

But the changes did not have an immediate impact and Needham continued to attack well.

On 64 minutes Needham got their reward for their continuous pressure which they had put on the Yachtsmen during the first 20 minutes of the second half, and scored the opening goal. However their goal came out of nothing. A long ball forward from deep inside the Needham half sailed over Josh Carus's head and in to the path of Sam Newson who dribbled the ball solely towards goal from midway inside the Wroxham half before blasting a shot past the back peddling Remi Matthews who had no chance in saving Newson's shot. 0-1 Needham Market.

Wroxham decided to make their final change on 68 minutes and add a bit more strength in midfield by bringing on Andy Eastaugh for Jack Smith for the final 20 minutes or so, in an attempt to stop Needham's midfield creativity.

But Needham continued to create opportunities to go forward for the next 5 minutes and nearly increased their single goal lead on 73 minutes when Ollie Fenn picked up a delivery, from the left, on the edge of the Wroxham penalty area with his back to goal, before turning on the inside of the Yachtsmen's defence and curling a smart effort on goal which forced Remi Matthews in to pulling off a smart save.

Wroxham then started to pull things together in midfield, and used both attacking full backs who did well going forward, playing Blake in twice on 75 and 77 minutes, who had two shots on goal comfortably stopped by Johnson.

However, it was not long until Wroxham did equalise when Andy Eastaugh found Matt Blake in plenty of space on the left, 10 yds inside the Needham half, who ran with the ball unchallenged up to the edge of the area before coming in on his inside right and neatly slotting the ball past Johnson and in to the bottom right hand corner of the goal to make it 1-1 with 12 minutes of the 90 remaining.

Both teams went on the hunt for the winner in the final 10 minutes, attacking from end to end. With Needham coming very close to nicking the winner on 87 minutes but Remi Matthews pulled off a splendid save to tip Jack Wilkinson's shot from outside the area over the bar.

With the game looking very likely to enter in to a penalty shoot out, Wroxham were given one last chance to finish the tie in normal time when they were awarded a free kick from 22 yds out, with 30 seconds of added time remaining. However, Gavin Lemmon stepped up to take the free kick and went for glory but blazed his effort well over the bar.

FT (After normal time) - Wroxham 1-1 Needham Market

With the tie finishing 1-1 after normal time, and the League Cup rule book stating that no extra time is to be played after 90 minutes, the tie was to be decided on penalties.

Wroxham were first up with Gavin Lemmon dispatching his penalty nicely past Johnson in goal. 1-0 Wroxham.

Olie Fenn was first up for Needham Market and blasted his penalty in to the top left hand corner of the goal, giving Remi Matthews no chance. 1-1.

Ben Jones then comfortably dispatched his penalty to make it 2-1 before Danny Bloomfield levelled the tie at 2-2.

Then Wroxham's Matt Halliday stepped up to take the Yachtsmen's third penalty and although Halliday struck his spot kick well, Needham's Goalkeeper pulled off a good save to keep the score at 2-2.

Sam Newson then slotted his penalty past Remi Matthews to give Needham the advantage and make it 2-3.

Ross Durrant scored his penalty to make it 3-3 before finishing his evening watching the story of the night unfold.

On loan Norwich City goalkeeper, who was making his final appearance of his one month loan spell for the Yachtsmen from the Premier League club, got down well to his left to save Kieron Leabon's spot kick to make the tie level, and then stepped aside to watch team mate Andy Eastaugh step up to score his penalty to give Wroxham the lead after the Yachtmens 5 penalties.

Matthews then got himself set between the sticks to face Needhams fifth penalty, before reading Nathan Clarkes well struck penalty correctly, this time diving to his right and pulling off a great save to give the Yachtsmen cup glory and ensure the Yachtsmen are in the hat for the next round draw.
