Manager Jordan Southgate made several changes from the team that lost its opening league game last weekend. In came Rio Abodunde, Tom Huckerby and Jordan King, but perhaps the most interesting change was there on the bench was ‘veteran’ striker Grant Holt.
On a sunny afternoon it was the home side that had the better of the opening minutes. In fact only a fine save by Ollie Sutton, tipping the ball over the cross bar kept the game scoreless. It was not until the 16th minute that Wroxham fashioned a goal scoring chance when a long range effort from Ryan Miles, took a deflection, and finished on top of the Bury net.
The game remained scoreless at half time and it was Wroxham who started the second half the stronger and a Ryan Miles effort came close but his effort went just over the bar. Bury were soon however in the ascendency securing a number of corners, however the Yachtsmen’s defence well marshalled by Josh Hazell and Tom Huckerby stood firm.
On 65 minutes Jordan Southgate introduced Grant Holt and Jaoa Rangel for Ryan Hawkins and Josh Harvey.
The deadlock was eventually broken on 69 minutes when a low cross from the left evaded the Wroxham defence and it allowed Louis Herman Mason to tap in at the far post. however Bury’s lead lasted no longer than a minute. A Wroxham corner caused mayhem in the Bury goal area and amidst a sea of legs, a Bury defender was adjudged to have got the final touch as the ball nestled at the back of the home goal.
On 74 minutes Wroxham made their final change when Jordan Southgate replaced Harley Black with Haydn Davis. Within minutes Wroxham scored what turned out to be the decisive goal. A Ryan Miles move down the left ended with his cross being met by the Bury defender, Ollie Fenn, however his attempted clearance flew past the bewildered keeper into the Bury goal.
Wroxham had the lead but the last ten minutes plus additional time would require concentration and game management. In Grant Holt they had the player with the experience of such situations, from holding the ball up in attack, but on this occasion more vitally joining the two Wroxham centre backs in heading away a number of corners and free kicks .
The only times that the Wroxham wall of defenders was breached, Ollie Sutton was there making a series of good stops, the best of which came on 88 minutes when he saved from point blank range to deny Bury an equaliser.
After 4 minutes of additional time, Wroxham had the victory, with a little help, and sail on into the next round of the FA Cup.
