It’s raining goals ! Yachtsmen sail on after Cup success

The Yachtsmen stormed into the next round of the FA Cup with an emphatic victory over the home side from the United Counties League.

The game started and finished in unrelenting rain, the wet conditions only made playing conditions more difficult on Yaxley’s 3G pitch, as passes skidded through the sodden playing surface. It took Wroxham some time to adjustment to these conditions, and in fact the first real chance fell to the home team, when a run from Matthew Harris-Hercules split the Wroxham defence, the striker lobbed Ollie Sutton but his effort hit the outside of the post and bounced away to safety.

Gradually however Wroxham’s organisation, passing and pace began to tell , and they went ahead on 34minutes. An attack down the left saw an interchange of passes between Travis Dodsworth and Ryan Miles; Miles cross was brought under control by Ryan Hawkins, who had time and space to turn before firing past Conor Barton in the home goal.

On 40 minutes Wroxham extended their lead , a free kick on the right was expertly taken by Harley Black, it pinpointed the head of Josh Hazell, whose towering header flew into the top of the net, past the despairing leap of the home defender.

The second half could not have started better for the Yachtsmen. In spite having a Shaun Taylor effort ruled out for offside, this was simply the introduction to the goal deluge that was to follow.

On 50 minutes Ryan Miles run through the home defence and lifted the ball past Barton to give Wroxham a three goal advantage.A minute later it was four, a Joao Rangel ran and cut in from the right, the winger spotted Miles at the far post and the striker made no mistake from close range.

It was soon 5-0, a Harley Black pass found Ryan Miles, but this time he turned provider, his pass found Josh Harvey with his back to goal, but his overhead kick found the back of the net. By this time the home defence was in disarray and a mix up allowed Josh Harvey to bag his second with some help from the home keeper.

The icing on the cake came when a Wroxham attack saw the ball passed back to Hayley Black standing some 20 yards out from goal, and the midfield player gave the keeper no chance with a well placed shot.

Not surprising with the result not in doubt, manager, Jordan Southgate, celebrating his 200th game in charge of the Yachtsmen, made several second half substitutions giving some young players valuable game experience and a taste of FA Cup action.

Over the 90 minutes Ollie Sutton in the Wroxham goal was rarely troubled, but in the closing minutes he was forced to make a good save low to his left, that ensured that Wroxham travelled home with a hatful of goals and a clean sheet.

After the game, Jordan Southgate commented that it took 15 minutes for his team to adapt to the playing conditions, but once they settled down they used possession well and looked comfortable for the remainder of the game.

In the next preliminary round Wroxham will again be on their travels, but this time a shorter trip to Suffolk, to meet Bury Town on Saturday 19th August.
