Battling Yachtsmen give the leaders a run for their money

Battling Yachtsmen give the leaders a run for their money

Chris Green22 Apr 2014 - 21:31

Wroxham were powerless to resist as two second half goals from Kris Newby helped league leaders Witham Town to a 4-1 victory at the Spicer McColl Ground.

The Yachtsmen - who were mathematically relegated before kick-off, with their only hope of playing in the Ryman League next season dependant on the positions of the teams in the feeder leagues below – started brightly but found themselves 1-0 down after 10 minutes.
Remy Gordon gifted possession to Anthony Anstead in the middle of the park, the striker embarking on a driving run into the box to strike his shot low to Robert Juhasz’s left and give his side the lead.
Wroxham responded brightly and got back on level terms nine minutes later, Jordan King’s quick free kick releasing Ross Durrant, who laid across the box for Stephen Drake to slam home from eight yards and restore parity.
Drake was then controversially barged off the ball when through on goal with nothing given, while Gordon blazed over on 35 minutes after some nice interplay between Durrant and Drake as Wroxham pressed their high flying opponents.
The Yachtsmen continued in the same vein as the second half began, the visitors being controversially denied a 55th minute penalty as Matt Halliday was seemingly pulled back in the area.
With very little between the sides, it took a massive slice of fortune to help give the home side the lead as a 66th minute corner from the right resulted in a game of pinball in the Wroxham penalty area, the ball ricocheting off Newby and into the net for 2-1.
Wroxham huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a response and the home side made them pay, scoring twice in the last ten minutes to take the game away from the visitors.
Newby bagged his second of the game from penalty spot after Danny Emmanuel was downed by Halliday on 82 minutes, before Tom Wraight controlled a long ball forward with panache, before burying his effort into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box to seal the win.
