Missed chances take toll on unlucky Yachtsmen

Missed chances take toll on unlucky Yachtsmen

Thomas Crabb12 Apr 2014 - 20:00

Rebridge scored four goals in the last 18 minutes as a spirited Wroxham suffered a second half capitulation at Oakside.

The Yachtsmen were on top for long periods of the game, Tim Cary striking the post in the 26th minute, before Remy Gordon missed two great chances either side of the hour mark, one with his head and the other a shot that he dragged wide as Wroxham failed to make their dominance count.

And they were made to pay as Redbridge laid assault to the Wroxham goal in the final 20 minutes, Emeil Aiken and Daniel Francis scoring twice in two minutes to take the game away from The Yachtsmen.

Ben Bradbury added a third from 20 yards with two minutes remaining to seal the points, before Francis bagged his second in injury time to make it 4-0 and leave Wroxham wondering where it all went wrong.

Wroxham created more than enough chances to take the points home, but a lack of composure in front of goal ultimately lead to their downfall, leaving them with a nigh on impossible task if they are to avoid relegation as Ware and Barkingside both picked up crucial wins in their bid for survival.

Wroxham made two changes from the side that lost to Ware, with Aaron Sanders dropping to the bench and Jack Guyton taking his place in the starting line up, Ben Price also returning to replace Sam Groves at left back.

The bobbly playing surface was playing havoc with the players’ touches from the off, Tim Cary whipping in a dangerous cross that was well held by Dean Driscoll after three minutes.

A 5th minute corner from Ben Bradbury gave Redbridge their first real opportunity, Daniel Smith failing to connect properly to divert the ball just wide of the left hand post.

Wroxham seemed to settle the better to the conditions - their attack spearheaded by a busy Remy Gordon - with the winger first having a free kick that went straight at Driscoll, before being laid in by a lovely through ball from Danny Self in the inside right position that he weakly struck at the Rebridge ‘keeper on 13 minutes.

The away side were exposing the spaces behind Redbridge’s back four well and, were it not for a couple contentious offside calls, they would have been in on goal.

Rebridge were creating in fits and starts, Emeil Aiken finding space in between Matt Halliday and Aaron Taylor to find an opening, only for the striker to drag his shot well side of the right hand post.

Wroxham then came closest to breaking the deadlock as Tim Cary struck the post.

A 26th minute throw in found its way to Stephen Drake, the striker keeping his composure to dink the ball behind the Rebridge back four and release Cary from six yards, who could only place his effort off the left upright and out.

Despite Wroxham looking the more likely, they still had to be wary of the home side’s attack, a Charlie Parish cross almost catching Robert Juhasz out with the Slovakian ‘keeper having to be on his toes to acrobatically tip the effort away from danger.

Balls into the box seemed to be Redbridge’s best chance of an opening, Eljay Worrell whipping in a delightful 40th minute that Parish could only head well over under pressure from Juhasz.

Daniel Francis then created a good opening for himself, finding space with some nifty footwork and firing a sharp shot down to the right that Juhasz had to be quick to tip away.

Redbridge continued to play a high line as the second half began, Jack Guyton releasing Gordon down the left only for his dangerous ball in to be cleared on the six yard line with Drake lurking.

Cary was the next to breach the Rebridge defence, finding himself in acres to pick out Self at the back post on 51 minutes, the Wroxham captain heading the ball back into danger only for Guyton to fail to get enough purchase on his header.

The wings were a great outlet for The Yachtsmen, with their forward play far superior to their opponents, and it was another quick break down the right that presented them with another great chance just before the hour mark.

Wroxham won the ball in the centre circle to spark a two-on-one situation, Gordon deciding to go by himself, beating the man but dragging his shot wide of the post from a tight angle.

The away side were getting closer and closer, Self finding himself free down the right on 62 minutes to dink the ball to the back post, Gordon beating Bostry Bansende at the back post to connect with the header but place it just wide.

Bansende then turned attacker two minutes later to produce Redbrige’s best chance, the right back collecting the ball from just outside the box to fire in a shot that Juhasz had to be careful to palm away.

With all Wroxham’s dominance, there was always the chance they would be left to rue their missed chances.

And this worry soon became reality as two goals in two minutes took the game away from The Yachtsmen.

The first came in soft circumstances, Francis – who was Redbridge’s most dangerous player – finding space on the byline to curl his ball across that beat everyone bar Aiken, who had the simplest of tasks to tap in from two yards.

The away side seemed shell-shocked, barely having time to regroup before finding themselves two down.

A Redbridge corner wasn’t properly cleared and fell to Stephen Good on the right wing, the defender having the composure to dink his cross in and find Francis free from six yards, who coolly volleyed his effort into the bottom corner for 2-0.

The game began to get stretched as Wroxham searched for a way back into the game, the away side piling forward with plenty of effort but no real substance.

And Redbridge punished them for their lack of quality in front of goal to bag two more late goals to compound Wroxham’s misery.

Bradbury got the first, casually curling in from 20 yards on 88 minutes to seal the win, before he turned provider in injury time to lay in Francis, who slotted in from the angle to make it 4-0, leaving Wroxham exasperated and six points from safety with just three games to play.
