Last minute howler gifts Swifts victory

Thomas Crabb8 Mar 2014 - 17:51

Robert Juhasz’s last minute howler handed Heybridge Swifts all three points in a tight game at Trafford Park.

Heybridge took the lead through Chris Bryan’s 34th minute free kick, before Danny Self got his side back in it, towering highest to head home Ross Durrant’s 51st minute free kick.

Things were tight at both ends with Wroxham unlucky not to be awarded a penalty with 10 minutes remaining after Durrant was seemingly tripped in the box, before Kevin Dobinson missed a superb chance for the visitors with two minutes left on the clock, dinking over the bar from six yards out.

But it would prove to be irrelevant as Juhasz’s last minute antics gifted Swifts the points, the Wroxham ‘keeper kicking the ball straight at Reece Morgan deep in injury time, who laid across for Dumebi Dumaka to tap in and steal victory.

Wroxham named an unchanged side from the side that beat Kings Lynn, with Danny Self retaining his centre half berth and Jack Guyton continuing his fine recent run in the First Team fold.

Both sides enjoyed some good early possession but it was the visitors who created the first real opening on four minutes, Chris Bryan breaking down the right to lay in Jamie Guy, the striker finding his feet before firing in a shot from eight yards that was smartly stopped by the feet of Robert Juhasz.

The Yachtsmen were enjoying more of the ball, with the visitors seemingly happy to soak up any pressure and try to hit Wroxham on the break.

Gordon was almost in after nine minutes for the home side as Ross Durrant’s through ball found the winger - only to be snuffed out by some find covering from Frank Everett - while Wroxham were thankful Guy’s touch left him down at the vital moment as his chest control squirted away from him and into the arms of Juhasz 60 seconds later.

The away side’s touch in defence was unsure on numerous occasions, Stephen Drake benefitting from one such incident to almost give his side the lead.

The striker picked up a bouncing ball on 22 minutes to set up a quick attack, the ball finding its way to Sam Harty on the right who dinked a delightful ball into Drake, the striker leaping highest to send a firm header towards goal that was superbly tipped wide by Ashley Harrison.

Swifts were still strong on the break, Guy missing another good opening on the half hour mark after Joe Marsden was outmuscled at the back post, the striker firing his effort at Juhasz, who had to palm the ball away from danger.

With things tight in possession between both sides, it took a dead ball situation to break the deadlock and give the away side the lead.

Self was guilty of clattering into Bryan on the edge of the box, the forward dusting himself off to curl his 34th minute free kick into the bottom right corner despite Juhasz’s best efforts, who got a hand to the stinging strike.

Wroxham were looking to strike back immediately, a succession of set pieces of their own putting pressure on the visitors, but ultimately resulting in nothing for the hosts as Heybridge’s defence held strong to half time.

Pawel Guziejko sent on Aaron Taylor and Ben Price for Danny Rust and Jordan King at half time, pushing Marsden further forward to try and give his side more in attack.

The away side almost took advantage of Wroxham adjusting to their re-organisation at the back straight away, Bryan coming inches away from bagging his second on 47 minutes, his curling effort from 20 yards just passing the right post.

But it would prove to be nothing more than a blip as the home side settled again, Self redeeming himself for his earlier foul to restore parity four minutes later.

The defender leapt highest in a crowded box to beat Harrison to the ball, nodding home Durrant’s whipped ball in from six yards to make it 1-1.

Things were tight at both ends as the game reached the hour mark, Guy fizzing an effort just wide of Juhasz’s left hand post, before the striker was given an even better opening five minutes later but could only shoot weakly at Juhasz when free from eight yards out.

Wroxham were interchanging well in attack but were lacking that killer instinct, Marsden curling wide from Harty’s cross-field ball in their only chance of note as the game reached the final 20 minutes.

It took a quick break down the right for them to open Heybridge up and have a great shout for a penalty, Gordon finding space down the right on 81 minutes to lay across for Durrant, who took a touch before being seemingly downed in the box, with no foul given.

Heybridge were still dangerous themselves, substitute Kevin Dobinson missing a superb chance to steal all three points with two minutes remaining, dinking his effort over both the goalkeeper and bar from eight yards out.

But Juhasz’s late howler meant the visitors would not be left to rue this miss, the Slovakian’s poor kick gifting Dumaka the chance to tap in and earn Heybridge the points, making it four straight league losses for Wroxham in the process.
