VCD cruise to victory over Yachtsmen

VCD cruise to victory over Yachtsmen

Thomas Crabb1 Mar 2014 - 18:35

Karl Dent inspired VCD Athletic to a commanding 3-0 victory over Wroxham at Trafford Park.

The midfielder drilled home after ten minutes to give VCD the lead, before Michael Power benefitted from some slick interplay between Dent and James Duckworth to volley home from the edge of the box after 38 minutes.

Pawel Guziejko made a triple substitution at half time to try and give his side more in attack, but it was VCD who continued to control matters, the impressive Dent slotting home for 3-0 with 59 minutes on the clock after Robert Juhasz’s weak punch fell to him eight yards out.

Wroxham tried to assert some pressure in the closing stages, Matt Doyle weakly heading at Nick Blue from six yards, before Joe Marsden struck the outside of the post, but it was not enough as VCD cruised to all three points.

Wroxham made three changes from the side that lost to Sudbury on Monday, with Daniel Self, Aaron Sanders and Sam Groves starting, with King dropping to the bench and Danny Rust and Stephen Drake missing.

The visitors began the sharper, enjoying some good early possession without any real penetration, before Dean Carpenter’s 10th minute throw in caused Wroxham problems and gave VCD the lead.

The midfielder’s throw wasn’t properly cleared and fell to Karl Dent on the edge of the box, who took a touch before firing his effort through Juhasz and into the bottom corner.

Wroxham looked for a quick riposte, Self finding himself space in the box two minutes later to pick out Ross Durrant, the striker’s control bobbling into Aaron Sanders’ path, who’s effort was well blocked.

Dent was controlling the action in the middle of the park, finding space again soon after to almost double the lead for his side, Juhasz this time managing to get a good hand on his 20 yard effort to tip it round the post.

The visitors’ elevated league position was beginning to show as they started to dominate proceedings, Alfie May and Barney Williams both having long range efforts that flew wide of Wroxham’s goal.

The Yachtsmen were struggling to control the ball, with some good pressing off the ball but no real action with it at their feet, Joe Marsden’s 40 yard effort that harmlessly bounced into Nick Blue’s hands on the half hour mark the best they could muster.

With the game limping towards half time, VCD turned on the style once more to make it 2-0 with a slick counter attack.

Dent found James Duckworth down the left, who’s surging run committed Matt Halliday, the Wroxham skipper allowing him two bites at the cherry to find Michael Power on the edge of the box, who confidently volleyed home.

Dent then missed a great chance to make it 3-0 with a minute of the half remaining, some slick link up play between Power and the midfielder set him free in the box, with Juhasz smothering the striker at his feet from eight yards.

Wroxham manager Pawel Guziejko made a bold move at the start of the second half, sending on Jack Guyton, Matt Doyle and Jordan King, going three at the back in the process to try and give a more attacking fluidity to his side.

The change did seem to give Wroxham more in attack, but in doing so left them more exposed at the back, Dent almost capitalising on the extra space to punish, but overran his touch to allow Halliday to cover in the left hand side of the box.

However, it wasn’t long before the impressive midfielder made it 3-0 as VCD assume total control.

Alfie May found space down the right to send a dipping ball in that deceived Juhasz, the ‘keeper flapping a weak punch straight into Dent’s path, who coolly slotted home from eight yards.

The visitors seemed happy to sit on their lead as the second half progressed but were still causing problems, May missing a great chance for 4-0 when he blazed over after some more superb midfield running by Dent.

Marsden was the only real shining light for The Yachtsmen with his continual effort to take the game the to visitors, the Wroxham man almost setting up Matt Doyle with a surging run that was blocked, before volleying an effort of his own over the bar from just outside the box.

Sam Groves then produced a committed last ditch challenge to deny Sherwin Stanley at the near post as the game entered the last ten, with Matt Doyle missing a free header from six yards down the other end, the striker failing to get enough purchase on his effort to trouble Blue in goal.

And Marsden came inches from claiming a consolation for the hosts with two minutes left, striking the post with a controlled 20 yard effort after a superb run from his own half, but it was all in vain as VCD continued their march towards the title with a superb performance.
