Last minute winner downs Yachtsmen again

Last minute winner downs Yachtsmen again

Thomas Crabb25 Feb 2014 - 00:31

Wroxham were on the wrong end of a last minute winner for the second time in three days as Jack Cawley’s 90th minute strike seized all three points for AFC Sudbury.

Wroxham had the two best chances of a tight first half, Remy Gordon and Kieren Joseph both having efforts cleared off the line after rounding Sudbury goalkeeper Alex Archer in the space of three minutes.

The Yachtsmen limited Sudbury to only half chances with some superb defensive organisation, Matt Daniels weakly flicking a 62nd minute effort straight at Robert Juhasz from six yards, before Jordan King blocked James Baker’s effort on the line with 10 minutes to go.

But Sudbury would have the last say, Cawley scuffing his shot in after Michael Shinn’s 90th minute free kick fell into his path, with Kieren Joseph being given his marching orders in the final moments for dissent.

Wroxham will be able to take many positives from the game despite coming away from it with nothing to show, with some stern defensive play and good passing football in a tight game.

Wroxham were without the injured Daniel Self, with Jordan King replacing him in the starting line up and Kieren Joseph also earning a starting berth ahead of Aaron Sanders, who dropped to the bench.

Sudbury created the first chance with just three minutes on the clock, Jack Cawley’s long throw being punched out by Robert Juhasz into the path of Ryan Horne, who snatched at his effort to fire over from 10 yards.

Both teams were playing at a high tempo, the home side’s pressure on the ball catching Joe Marsden out inside his own half to spark a Sudbury counter attack, with James Akintunde breaking into the box but unable to find a team mate with his cut back.

Sudbury were looking more dangerous in the final third, Greg Crane heading just wide from Horne’s corner after 22 minutes as they searched for an opener.

Some slick interplay between Joseph and Remy Gordon produced Wroxham with their first real chance of the night as the game approached the half hour mark, a back heel from Joseph releasing Gordon down the wing, who cut back in on the second attempt to drag his shot just wide of the near post.

Wroxham then had two efforts cleared off the line in the space of three minutes as they began to seize control.

Gordon was released by a lovely chip through ball by Ross Durrant and rounded Alex Archer in goal, his effort seemingly destined for the net from a tight angle only to be foiled by Horne on the line.

And Sudbury had to be thankful for some more last ditch defending - this time from Ryan Henshaw - who blocked Kieren Joeseph’s effort after the striker latched onto Joe Marsden’s superb 50 yard driven ball to round Archer, but be denied by the flailing defender in agonizing fashion.

With Sudbury failing to create much on the ground as the game surged towards half time, Cawley’s long throws were a great outlet, with a couple in quick succession causing Robert Juhasz to lose his cool and seemingly shove Sam Clarke to the ground in frustration, the goalkeeper escaping with just a yellow for his actions.

Both sides had good chances in stoppage time, former Wroxham player Matt Daniels miss kicking when well placed from six yards out, before Marsden went on a characteristic dart into the box but could only drag his shot wide of the target.

The Yachtsmen almost started the second half in flying fashion, Joseph trying his luck straight from kick off with an outrageous 50 yard effort that almost caught Archer out, the goalkeeper just tipping the ball over the bar.

Neither side were giving up much in their defensive thirds, making for a tight affair as the game reached the hour mark.

Daniels had another chance for the hosts, this time connecting arguably too well with the ball to draw a superb flying save from Juhasz on the angle.

The visitors were looking the better of the two teams as the game entered the final 20 minutes, several good positions just lacking that final ball in their search for an opener.

Daniels was then presented with another good chance for the hosts, latching onto yet another Cawley throw that caused confusion in the Wroxham defence, only to flick his effort weakly into Juhasz’s hands.

It was then time for Wroxham to show some stern last ditch defending, a goalmouth scramble ensuing after Juhasz lost the flight of a Subdury cross, Hornes striking an effort that was deflected into James Baker’s path, the striker scuffing his shot straight at King who cleared off his line.

The game was getting scrappy, with a spout of yellow cards for both teams breaking up the play with 10 minutes remaining.

With time ticking away, it was clear that one chance would be all it would take for either side to grab the points, with Cawley – who had been a constant threat with his hands all game – finally finding his feet to snatch the points for his side.

Michael Shinn’s 90th minute free kick fell to the left back on the edge of the box, who scuffed his shot over the sprawled Juhasz and into the net.

And Joseph was shown a second yellow to compound Wroxham’s misery and sentence them to their second loss in three days in unfortunate fashion.
