Wroxham end Soham's unbeaten run in style

Thomas Crabb21 Jan 2014 - 22:29

Wroxham ended Soham Town Rangers’ 13 game unbeaten run in emphatic style with a dominating 3-0 victory at Trafford Park.

Luke Stanley struck the post early on for Soham, before Joe Marsden gave Wroxham the lead in the 23rd minute with his eighth penalty of the season after Remy Gordon was fouled in the box.

Gordon then doubled the home side’s lead with a supreme left footed drive after 54 minutes, before Marsden bagged his second of the game after some excellent midfield running by Sam Harty.

Drake blazed over in the final few moments as the hosts went in search of a fourth, while Soham had a header cleared off the line at the death, but Wroxham held out for a deserved victory to end Soham’s recent run and complete the season double over the Cambridgeshire outfit.

The Yachtsmen welcomed back Ben Price at the expense of Tim Cary, with Joe Marsden utilised in a more attacking position and young midfielder Jack Guyton starting at the expense of the injured Ross Durrant.

Wroxham settled well and enjoyed some good early possession, Stephen Drake firing just over from 20 yards after some good link up play with Jack Guyton in the fifth minute.

The home side were playing some neat stuff in the middle, Sam Harty finding Remy Gordon who struck his effort just wide from the edge of the box.

Soham’s top scorer Luke Stanley had made an unassuming start before he leapt into life from Buster Harradine’s 14th minute free kick, the striker finding himself free from six yards but was only able to crash his header off the left upright and out.

Gordon was a constant threat with his pace down the left and this ultimately paid as he helped Wroxham take the lead after 23 minutes.

Daniel Self laid a beautifully weighted pass into his path, the winger dinking the ball over Callum McDermott in goal before being brought down by the goalkeeper, with Stephen Finch pointing at the spot.

Joe Marsden stepped up with a 100% record from the spot this season, a run he continued by coolly slotting his effort into the bottom right corner for 1-0.

It was hard to tell which side possessed the 13 game unbeaten run as Wroxham continued to control proceedings, Marsden having two efforts in the space of three minutes to double his tally, forcing McDermott into two smart saves.

Ben Price then had a skewed effort from a Marsden corner that almost dropped to Drake in the box as the game moved past the half hour mark with Wroxham in control.

The upright was then struck for a second time – this time at the Wroxham end – as Joe Marsden came agonizingly close to making it two.

Gordon beat his man down the left before firing in a drilled cross, Marsden bundling his effort off his side and into the upright, the ball bouncing straight back in McDermott’s welcoming arms.

The home side continued their pressing after the break as Gordon once again broke free down the left, firing in for Drake who miss kicked when he really should have hit the back of the net.

Joey Abbs then clipped the bar for Soham before Wroxham doubled their lead in emphatic style with 54 minutes on the clock.

Some neat one touch football between Harty and Self got Gordon in, the winger letting the ball run across him before unleashing an unstoppable 20 yard drive into the bottom right hand corner.

Soham began to press higher up in the pitch in search of a way back into the game, leaving holes in their defence for Wroxham to exploit, Harty doing the honours to set up a superb 65th minute third goal for the hosts.

The midfielder burst through the heart of the Soham midfield with a confident 40 yard run, picking out Marsden on the right side of the box to allow the midfielder to drill his effort across McDermott and into the bottom corner.

The hosts weren’t content to settle for three as Gordon fired into the side netting with 20 minutes remaining.

Soham were trying push forward but were constantly thwarted by a stout Wroxham defence, Harty producing three heroic blocks in the space of 30 seconds to keep the score to nil as the game entered the final 10 minutes.

Drake then blazed over from six yards with five minutes remaining before Soham had a header cleared off the line at the death, but Wroxham held out for the win, securing their third clean sheet in four games and their first victory in the league in eight.
