Ten-man Wroxham undone by Stevens double

Ten-man Wroxham undone by Stevens double

Thomas Crabb18 Jan 2014 - 19:00

A dead ball double salvo from James Stevens gave Witham Town a hard earned 2-1 victory over ten-man Wroxham at Trafford Park.

Robert Juhasz tipped Lewis Godbold’s 14th minute effort onto the bar in a tight opening, before Stevens’ superb 25 yard free kick after 28 minutes gave the visitors the lead.

Wroxham’s Daniel Self was then shown a straight red card for violent conduct on the stroke of half time, but a spirited response saw the hosts draw level with 20 minutes remaining from a Remy Gordon tap in after some superb running by Sam Harty.

Parity didn’t last long though as Stevens bagged his second, converting from 12 yards after Armando Alves’ clumsy tackle on Dan Emmanuel after 74 minutes.

And the visitors played out the rest of the game with relative ease to down a spirited Wroxham and earn them the three points.

Wroxham welcomed back Robert Juhasz and Aaron Taylor to the starting XI from Tuesday’s victory over Diss Town at the expense of Kingsley Barnes and Ben Price.

Witham were very organised from the off with their set up, Wroxham struggling to break down their stout defence with two darting runs down the left from Remy Gordon with no end product the best for either side in a tight opening.

It was the away side who created the first real opening with 14 minutes on the clock, Dan Emmanuel making a bursting run down the right before finding Lewis Godbold in the box, the striker forcing Robert Juhasz to tip his effort onto the bar in superb style.

A bit of individual brilliance from Joe Marsden then presented Wroxham with their first chance of the game, beating three men down the right before losing control of the ball, the rebound falling to Gordon who sliced his effort wide from eight yards out.

Danny Self then had a tame free kick that fell straight into Martyn Guest’s arms with 22 minutes gone as The Yachtsmen began to gain a foothold in the match.

With neither side in the ascendancy it took a moment of brilliance from Witham’s James Stevens to break the deadlock.

A handball gave Stevens the chance from 25 yards out, the midfielder composing himself before sending an unstoppable free kick that flew past Juhasz and into the top left hand corner.

The visitors were beginning to turn the screw as they pressed for a second, Stevens again with a golden chance when through on goal only to be snuffed out by Juhasz, before the ball spilled out to Godbold, who lofted his effort over the ‘keeper but not over Halliday, who was well positioned on the line to head clear.

Wroxham were then reduced to ten men as Daniel Self was given his marching orders just before half time.

Marsden overran the ball and collided with Witham defender Luke Olley, the visiting man grabbing Marsden by the neck with Self springing to his defence in what was adjudged to be an over zealous manner, resulting in a red card for the Wroxham midfielder.

Mac Gee replaced Tim Cary at half time, with Marsden pushing further forward in an attempt to give Wroxham more options in attack.

The Yachtsmen were forced to play on the break as Witham pushed forward to try and make their numerical advantage count, Gordon being set free by a superb 40 yard ball by Marsden that he could only skew wide from the inside left position.

The home side were showing heart despite their disadvantage, with some promising attacking positions failing to produce an end product on numerous occasions.

Halliday again came to his goalkeeper’s rescue as the game ticked past the hour mark, clearing the ball from his own six yard box after Juhasz outstretched arm couldn’t reach Tom Wraight’s ball in.

Wroxham were arguably the better side and they got the equaliser their determination deserved in the 70th minute.

Sam Harty was the architect, rampaging on a superb and determined run through Witham’s midfield, challenging Guest on the edge of the box with the ball squirting past the ‘keeper and allowing Gordon to chase it down and tap in from two yards.

This spurred Witham into attack, a goalmouth scramble resulting in a fine point black stop from Juhasz after Wraight’s near post effort, before Stevens bagged his second dead ball goal of the game - this time from the penalty spot – to retake the lead for his side.

Armando Alves sloppy challenge on Dan Emmanuel gave Sean Feerick no choice but to point at the spot, with Stevens dispatching his penalty with panache into the top right hand corner.

Witham could have been awarded a second spot kick of the game as Emmanuel was bundled over once more – this time by Marsden – by Feerick resisted the temptation to point at the spot.

But it was irrelevant as the visitors played out the remainder to seal the win and condemn a plucky Wroxham to defeat.
