Wroxham endure frustrating afternoon at Erith

Wroxham endure frustrating afternoon at Erith

Thomas Crabb11 Jan 2014 - 19:26

Wroxham had to settle for a point as they endured a frustrating afternoon against Erith and Belvedere at Park View Road.

Laurence Collins missed the best chance of a drab opening half, flicking a back post header just wide for the hosts in the 45th minute.

The Yachtsmen improved as the second half began, Ben Price having two efforts in the space of ten seconds cleared off the line, before Ross Durrant had a sublime 25 yard volley tipped wide as they took control.

Stephen Drake then missed a golden opportunity when one-on-one to grab the points with 20 minutes left, before Ryan Flack almost snatched a winner for the home side but could only find lay his effort straight at Robert Juhasz in the dying moments.

Pawel Guziejko will be frustrated to only come out of the game with a point as his side were dominant for long periods of the second half, but a draw ends what has been a torrid string of defeats for his men.

Danny Self and Mac Gee were making their first appearances of the season for the First Team in place of suspended duo Sam Harty and Remy Gordon, while Ross Durrant was also in the line up for the first time in two and a half months.

Both teams struggled to settle on a weathered pitch, with not much in the way of clear openings for either side.

Matt Halliday’s weak effort was the best of note for The Yachtsmen, Ashley Bourne saving his tame effort down to his right after Ben Price’s free kick wasn’t properly cleared after eight minutes.

Erith’s front man Luke Tanner was probing on the shoulders of the Wroxham back four, almost nicking in from Luis Rozan’s long ball forward that was snuffed out by Robert Juhasz, who was quick off his line.

Richard Morgan then had a good chance for the hosts as they began to get into the game, drifting in from the right to fire his left footed effort just over the bar from 20 yards.

Ross Durrant and Stephen Drake – who were rekindling their attacking partnership for the first time in two and a half months – were beginning to combine more as the game reached the half hour mark, Drake’s flicked header falling to Durrant, who could only volley straight at Bourne.

As the game edged towards half time, it was the home side who were posing the bigger threat.

Three corners in a row caused The Yachtsmen problems, the first from Rozan having to be cleared smartly from under his bar by Juhasz, before Laurence Collins headed just wide from another Rozan delivery in the half’s best chance.

The Yachtsmen came out looking for an improvement in their attacking play at the start of the second half, this change in mindset almost having an immediate impact.

Drake made a burst down the right, whipping a fine ball in that Mac Gee failed to make a good connection with when free from ten yards out.

Ben Price then had two efforts cleared off the line as The Yachtsmen pressed.

His first was a fine back post header from a Durrant corner that was well blocked, before a goalmouth scramble ensued, the ball ricocheting off Price’s leg only to be foiled on the line for a second time in frenetic fashion.

Wroxham were in the ascendancy as the game approached the hour mark, Joe Marsden blazing over from the edge of the box after some nifty footwork by Danny Rust, before Durrant unleashed a superb half volley on the turn from 25 yards that Bourne had to tip wide.

Drake then missed a golden chance to give his side the lead with 68 minutes on the clock.

Halliday found space in the middle of the park, slotting a precise through ball into the striker’s feet, who took it in his stride well but could only fire his effort too close to Bourne from just inside the box.

Erith were still a threat on the break, winger Morgan trying an audacious effort with the outside of his right boot that curled just over as the game entered the last ten minutes.

And they almost snatched all three points in the dying moments, Ryan Flack breaking through in stoppage time, only to place his shot straight at Juhasz who had advanced well out of his area to restrict both sides to just a point – but end their respective runs of successive defeats.
