Poor start to 2014 for Yachtsmen

Poor start to 2014 for Yachtsmen

Thomas Crabb1 Jan 2014 - 17:57

Wroxham started the New Year in disappointing fashion as a brace apiece for Ryan Melaugh and Ian Westlake helped Needham Market to a 5-2 win at Trafford Park.

The two combined for Needham’s first after three minutes, Melaugh slotting past Robert Juhasz for the lead, before Sam Harty curled a sublime 20 yard effort ten minutes later to restore parity.

Melaugh then got his second to retake the lead on 53 minutes, before two Westlake goals in eight minutes took the game away from Wroxham.

Harty bagged his second 20 yard effort of the game with 13 minutes to go to spark hopes of a comeback, but Adam Mills’ 88th minute header secured the points for Needham after good work by Luke Ingram.

The visitors made the most of having the wind at their backs in the second period to control the game, with four second half goals taking the match away from The Yachtsmen.

Needham got off to a flying start, taking the lead after three minutes. Former Ipswich striker Ian Westlake beat the offside trap to lay an inch perfect ball across for Ryan Melaugh, who composed himself before slotting his shot past Robert Juhasz in goal.

They didn’t hold the lead for long as Sam Harty produced a piece of class to level things in the 12th minute.

After some patient build up outside the box, the ball was laid back to Harty who curled a supreme 20 yard effort into the top right hand corner.

Remy Gordon then had a great chance for the hosts as they tried to turn the screw, a poor back header by Keiran Morphew let the winger in, only for him to tamely lay his effort straight into Andrew Plummer’s hands.

Despite the blustery conditions, both teams were playing some good football, with chances coming at both ends.

Luke Ingram first failed to find the target with his 19th minute header from six yards out when unmarked, before Tim Cary worked some good space for himself 60 seconds later, only to fire his bobbling shot too close to Plummer.

Needham were beating Wroxham’s offside trap time and time again, Kem Izzet the beneficiary in the 25th minute, firing his effort past the back post only for Malton to fail to make a proper connection.

Malton was making a nuisance of himself and he was almost in again, only for Matt Halliday to marshal him well at the near post after a delightful ball in by Daryll Coakley to deflect his shot into Juhasz’s hands.

The game edged towards half time without much incident, Malton again wasting a good half chance, volleying wide from eight yards.

Izzet was commander-in-chief for the visitors as they kept looking for a second, the former Colchester midfielder linking the play in a compact midfield, but neither side could seize the initiative before the half time whistle.

With the swirling wind going against The Yachtsmen at the start of the second half, they were struggling to clear their lines.

Needham were using the conditions to their advantage and they retook the lead with 53 minutes on the clock.

Melaugh found space down the left to take a touch before firing his shot through Juhasz, who got a hand on it but only managed to palm it into the top corner.

Needham were the main aggressors as the half wore on, with Westlake and Malton constantly putting the Wroxham defence on the back foot.

And they were soon three up as Westlake got the goal his play deserved.

Some slick interplay handed the chance to the striker, who jinked his way into the box, somehow keeping his balance with the ball stuck under his feet before placing his shot into the bottom right corner from a tight angle.

The visitors were in the ascendacy – despite Wroxham’s best efforts going forward – and they cemented their lead after 71 minutes as Westlake bagged his second, the striker tapping in at the back post after Ingram’s ball evaded everyone.

The Yachtsmen were still digging in and they found a way back into the game as Harty grabbed his second.

Joe Marsden’s 77th minute corner found him on the edge of the box, the midfielder flicking the ball up with his first touch before firing a volley with his second that crept into the bottom right hand corner.

But any hopes of a comeback were quashed as substitute Adam Mills popped up at the back post to head home with two minutes remaining to secure the win – and condemn Wroxham to their fifth straight defeat.
