Magpies see off Wroxham

Magpies see off Wroxham

Thomas Crabb27 Dec 2013 - 10:55

Dereham completed the double over Wroxham with a comprehensive 4-0 win at Aldiss Park.

Danny Beaumont opening the scoring with a superb 20 yard curling effort, before Craig Bussens made it 2-0 after Aaron Cranfield in the Wroxham goal failed to meet a bouncing ball at the back post.

Ryan Hawkins then scored Dereham’s third just before the break, firing a superb 25-yard effort that was adjudged to have crossed the line after crashing off the bar.

And Wroxham’s afternoon went from bad to worse as Matt Halliday fired into his own net in attempt to clear Nicky Howell’s effort.

The Yachtsmen’s defensive demons – which had subsided in recent weeks – came back to haunt them in what was a disappointing display from Pawel Guziejko’s men.

Both sides started with a good tempo, but too many misplaced passes made for a scrappy opening.

Wroxham were playing the neater stuff, with Remy Gordon twice almost nicking in at the back post, first from a dangerous back pass from Luke Hannant that goalkeeper Andrew Wilton smothered well, before Tim Cary lashed a shot that just beat him to go wide.

Cary and Gordon combined again with 12 minutes on the clock, the right winger curling a precise cross from out wide that Gordon connected with, only for his weak header to go straight at Wilton.

The game – and Dereham – needed a spark and it came in the form of Danny Beaumont’s superb effort after 20 minutes to give his side the lead.

Wroxham got caught playing one too many passes at the back, with the ball falling to Beaumont just outside the box, who struck his first time effort expertly over Cranfield and into the top right corner for 1-0.

The goal gave the home side confidence as they began to assert more pressure, Sam Borrer heading his near post effort just wide after some probing wing play by Ryan Hawkins.

Cranfield then had to be quick off his line as Wroxham were almost the masters of their own downfall again, Aaron Taylor playing a short back pass that Beaumont almost poached, only to be foiled by The Yachtsmen ‘keeper’s flailing tackle on the edge of the box that resulted in some treatment for the Wroxham No. 1.

Some more calamitous defending then let Dereham in a second time as they doubled their lead courtesy of Craig Bussens.

With the ball ricocheting around the Wroxham penalty area, it managed to find its way to Bussens, who beat Cranfield - still feeling the effects from his earlier knock - to the ball to lift his header over him from three yards as the goalkeeper failed to come and meet the ball.

Wroxham were trying to impose themselves on the break, but some stout defensive play from The Magpies was giving them little to feed off.

Tim Cary struck a weak shot straight at Wilton, before the Dereham ‘keeper was called into action again after 40 minutes to smother Gordon after the winger took a heavy touch from Joe Marsden’s through ball.

Dereham then compounded their control with a third in contentious circumstances.

Wroxham failed to clear their lines again as the ball made its way to Ryan Hawkins, who fired his effort from the edge of the box onto the underside of the crossbar and down, the linesman making the call that it had crossed the line.

Cranfield's injury was more serious than first thought and was replaced by Jack Smith at half time, with Sam Harty taking his place between the sticks as Wroxham looked for a way back into the game.

It almost came straight away as Gordon beat Michael Sommerfield down the left, before firing a smart shot that Wilton palmed away towards Joe Marsden, who was just beaten to the rebound.

A long hopeful ball then landed at the feet of Hawkins after 53 minutes as the home side searched for a fourth, the winger lashing his shot well over the bar with Harty in no-mans-land.

Chances then came at both ends as the game reached the hour mark, Jordan King first missing a golden opportunity from Ben Price’s header back, the midfielder failing to make a good connection at the near post with his header.

The clearance then made its way to Hawkins, who found space on the wing again to drive over the halfway line and to the edge of the box, only to hit his swerving effort straight at Harty.

Hawkins was a constant thorn in Wroxham’s side, the winger almost converting Beaumont’s cross with a fancy volleyed flick that flew just over the bar.

Dereham were in complete control as the game moved in the final 15 minutes and they got their fourth with another defensive mishap, Captain Halliday putting the ball into his own net from Nicky Howell’s shot after some good build up play by Hawkins.

Aaron Kay almost joined in on the scoring act as Dereham flooded forward, the midfielder striking his effort just over the bar from the edge of the box in the final minutes.

But it made no difference as The Magpies strolled over the line to sentence Wroxham to their third straight defeat, giving Guziejko some more worrying questions ahead of Saturday’s game against Waltham Forest.
