Aaron Sanders gave Wroxham the lead after 53 minutes, slotting the ball into the empty net from Remy Gordon’s cross.
Cheshunt skipper Ben Llewellyn then drew things level with a driven effort from the edge of the box that slipped through Aaron Cranfield’s fingers, before Matt Halliday’s towering header from a Klaus Svekis flick made it 2-1 with 23 minutes remaining.
And Remy Gordon sealed the win with a goal in injury time, tapping in at the back post from Joe Marsden’s cross.
The Yachtsmen were much improved in the second half and were rarely troubled by their Hertfordshire opponents in what will be a pleasing performance for boss Pawel Guziejko.
Both teams made a slow start, with the pitch making it difficult for either side to play free flowing football.
Wroxham were controlling the play better, with more composure on the ball without creating too much in the way of clear cut chances, Svekis flicking on Marsden’s early effort from an offside position that was rightly scrubbed off in the only chance of note.
The home side began to settle and were probing the Wroxham defence with more potency, Will Holmes failing to capitalise on a poor Cranfield clearance to fire his shot wide after ten minutes.
Cranfield was then forced into the first save of the game six minutes later as he tipped over expertly from a fierce Holmes effort.
The hosts – spearheaded by the impressive Holmes – were beginning to turn the screw and the midfielder forced Cranfield into another smart stop at his near post, before Allen Bossman missed the best chance of the game with 25 minutes on the clock.
It was Holmes again who found space on the edge of the box to fire a low effort that Cranfield stopped well, only for the rebound to fall to Bossman who could only lift his effort over the bar from eight yards out.
The Yachtsmen were struggling in the final third and were lacking their usual attacking spark.
Marsden tried his best to ignite things for the visitors after 33 minutes with a characteristic surging run, the right back beating three men down the wing before firing a driven cross that was flicked behind by the Cheshunt defence from right under Will Viner’s nose in goal.
The second half started in the same tight vein, with Wroxham failing to find that final clinical ball on various occasions.
However, the killer ball finally came courtesy of Jordan King to help give Wroxham the lead.
The midfielder slotted the ball into Remy Gordon’s path, who outmuscled Joe Clemo to compose himself, before slotting the ball across the vacant six yard box for Sanders to tap it into the empty net at the back post.
Two goals in three minutes then sparked the second half into life as both captains got their names on the score sheet.
Cheshunt first restored parity as a ball across the box found Llewellyn, who took a touch before firing his effort through Cranfield and into the bottom right hand corner.
Halliday then retook the lead for his side after 67 minutes as Svekis flicked on Marsden’s low free kick, the high ball being met by the defender’s towering header that looped into the top corner.
The Wroxham captain was forced off injured as a result of the goal, a clash of heads ending his game early with Aaron Taylor replacing him for his first appearance since moving from Diss Town.
Cheshunt almost pulled things straight away as Cranfield was forced into another impressive stop, this time from substitute John Megicks, whose 35 yards effort was well kept out only for the rebound to fall to Milton Elenge, who inexplicably struck the post with the goal at his mercy from three yards.
Elenge was then lucky to stay on the pitch as the game moved into the final ten minutes, the defender taking down Marsden when he was through on goal only for the referee to give him just a caution.
The game began to get stretched as Cheshunt flooded forward in search of a second equaliser of the game, almost getting it through Lewis Payne, who dragged his effort wide from just inside the box.
But it was The Yachtsmen who had the final say, Marsden exposing the holes in the Cheshunt defence to race down the left, before laying an inch perfect cross for Gordon, who made no mistake from six yards to give his side a well earned - and much needed – victory.
