Marsden salvages late draw for Yachtsmen

Marsden salvages late draw for Yachtsmen

Thomas Crabb24 Nov 2013 - 09:40

Joe Marsden’s 89th minute strike salvaged a point for Wroxham and denied Chatham in a tight affair at Maidstone Road.

Marsden hit the post early, before Chatham took the lead through Austin Gacheru, the striker converting his diving header in the 43rd minute from Alfie May’s cross.

Luis Tibbles then denied the striker his second with a superb double save in the second half, before Marsden hit the woodwork again, his lofted effort landing on top of the bar as Wroxham went in search of an equaliser.

And it duly came as Marsden bagged his 13th goal of the season, curling a superb effort into the top right hand corner to rescue a point for The Yachtsmen.

Wroxham started and finished the game in a strong fashion, and whilst the home side were guilty of missing some good chances, a draw was probably the fairest outcome.

Both teams started with an attacking intent, producing a flurry of half chances at either end in the opening ten minutes.

Marsden was guilty of missing the best of these for Wroxham after seven minutes, Tim Cary cushioning his header into the right back’s path, who could only strike his effort wide of the left upright.

Wroxham’s top scorer was then in on the act again ten minutes later, controlling Sam Harty’s pass before firing a bobbling effort from 25 yards that struck the post and bounced back out as the away side tried to seize control.

Chatham were relying heavily on their big striker and captain Austin Gacheru to ignite them, but with Matt Halliday and Rio Starkings marshalling him well at the back, the hosts were struggling to create.

There were still a few long range efforts to excite the home crowd, but Lee Hales’ effort was straight at Tibbles, while May’s dipping shot flew wide of the right post.

Hales and May were Chatham’s two brightest sparks as they began to push with the end of the half looming.

And it was the latter who set up Gacheru as Chatham took the lead just before the break.

The right winger found space to whip a devilish ball across the six yard box, Gacheru finding himself unmarked from six yards to clinically convert his diving header past a sprawling Tibbles for 1-0.

Chatham started the second half in much the same fashion, Tibbles smothering Keiran McCann’s effort at the back post before Gacheru turned Starkings inside out, only to fire his shot wide.

This seemed the spur The Yachtsmen on, Remy Gordon beating his man down the right after 56 minutes only for his pull back to fail to find a teammate.

Wroxham were trying to push for the equaliser but time and time again failed to find the killer final ball.

Chatham were happy to sit back and hit them on the counter, with May causing numerous problems down the right.

The young winger almost beat Tibbles with his near post effort on 65 minutes, only for the ‘keeper to produce a smart save, before a superb double stop from two Gacheru efforts moments later kept Wroxham in the game.

The striker’s first shot was well saved as Tibbles dived to his left, before the rebound fell back to him only for his second attempt to be blocked again by the young goalkeeper with a superb save with his feet.

Wroxham pushed two up top and they almost got the equaliser as Marsden hit the woodwork for the second time in the game.

Some slick interplay from Jordan King and Tim Cary resulted in a lovely chipped ball from King, Marsden racing through to beat Lee Kidman in the Chatham goal to the ball, but his lofted effort looped onto the top of the bar and over.

The Yachtsmen were putting the Chatham defence under severe pressure as the game neared its end.

And Marsden got the goal his play deserved to rescue the point for his side with 60 seconds remaining, picking the ball up on the edge of the area before curling his effort into the top corner to salvage a draw and continue his fine run of personal form.

Wroxham now travel to Thetford Town in the Senior Cup on Tuesday night.
