Swifts Hit Yachtsmen For Seven

Swifts Hit Yachtsmen For Seven

Adam Dennehey10 Nov 2013 - 20:21

Heybridge Swifts produced a commanding display to outclass a hapless Wroxham 7-2 at Scraley Road.

The Swifts raced into a three goal lead by half time, Kevin Dobinson the recipient of two Tibbles rebounds that fell his way to tap in either side of a Russell Malton attempt.

Wroxham started the second half with more urgency and intent, Remy Gordon grabbing an eight minute double salvo to give The Yachtsmen hope of a comeback.

But a brace apiece for Luke Callander and Michael Cheek put the result beyond doubt and sentenced Wroxham to a sixth straight defeat.

Apart from a 15 minute spell at the start of the second half, where Wroxham almost got back on level terms, Heybridge were in complete control for long periods and got the victory they deserved.

Heybridge started with a composure that justified their elevated league position, passing the ball about with patience and precision in the early exchanges.

Centre forward Callander was creating menace for the Wroxham defence with his strong hold up play, forcing Tibbles into an early stop with a tame effort from the edge of the box after six minutes.

Tim Cary was guilty of missing Wroxham’s best chance of the first quarter, heading straight at goalkeeper Danny Sambridge when he really should have done better.

Swifts then took the lead their superiority deserved, Callander playing a pivotal role.

His 22nd minute free kick bobbled just in front of Tibbles, who’s awkward one handed save was not enough as Dobinson snuck in to fire his shot into the roof of the net from six yards.

The hosts were looking dangerous every time they crossed the halfway line, Russell Malton causing numerous problems down the left with his tricky wing play.

And it was Malton who doubled Heybridge’s lead minutes later, striking his effort into the bottom left corner after the Wroxham defence failed to clear their lines.

Wroxham introduced new signing Klaus Svekis in attempt to stem the Heybridge flow, but it was the hosts who were still imposing themselves on the game and they got their third with seven minutes left of the half.

Malton’s corner found Michael Cheek at the back post, whose header was superbly saved by Tibbles only for the rebound to once again fall for Dobinson, the midfielder heading into the empty net for his second of the game.

Sam Harty was brought on at half time for Jordan King, and the young midfielder made an instant impact as Wroxham pulled one back.

Harty made a burst down the left with 56 minutes on the clock, taking a touch before laying an inch perfect cross along the six yard box for Remy Gordon to tap in.

The introduction of Harty seemed to stabilise the Wroxham midfield and give them more potency in attack, and Gordon grabbed his and Wroxham’s second just after the hour mark.

Sam Groves picked out an inviting through ball for Gordon to run onto, the winger taking his time before finishing superbly from a tight angle.

Gordon then almost got his third and complete a remarkable turnaround as Wroxham cranked up the pressure, weaving his way into the box only for his placed effort to be well saved by Sambridge.

However, any hopes of a Wroxham comeback were then squashed as Callander got the goal his first half play deserved, side-footing his volley into the bottom left hand corner from just inside the box with 20 minutes remaining.

This fourth seemed to spur the hosts back into life as they wrestled back control of the game.

Tibbles was forced into two good saves, first from substitute Sam Bantik before he smothered Ben Newson’s back post attempt as they went in search of a fifth.

And it soon came as Swifts but the result beyond any doubt, Callander getting his second of the game with a clinical finish from Bantik’s through ball.

Cheek then got in on the scoring act as he bagged two in the final seven minutes to add gloss to an impressive display, and condemn The Yachtsmen to another heavy defeat.
