Yachtsmen Slip To Burnham Defeat

Yachtsmen Slip To Burnham Defeat

Adam Dennehey3 Nov 2013 - 23:45

Neil Richmond’s late bundled-effort sunk a spirited Wroxham 2-1 at the Leslie Field Stadium.

Nikki Beale’s 53rd minute header gave Burnham the lead as Wroxham’s set piece frailties were once again exposed.

Joe Marsden then equalised with a header of his own with 13 minutes left to give Wroxham hope.

But Richmond bundled in Charlie Kirby’s cross to seal the win, despite Wroxham’s best efforts in a frantic finale that saw Marsden go close twice and Tim Cary strike the bar.

In a much improved performance from The Yachtsmen, which saw them pepper the Burnham goal in the final stages, there will be many wondering how they didn’t come away with at least a point.

Wroxham adopted a 4-5-1 formation from the off, with Joe Marsden dropping into right back and Bartek Pelka pushing forward into midfield in the absence of the injured Sam Harty.

In a scrappy opening, not aided by the wet and blustery conditions, it was The Yachtsmen who created the first real opening after three minutes.

Tim Cary benefitted from a Pedro Sanha layback to hit the ball on the half volley, which beat the Luis Godwin-Green in goal but not the defender on the line despite Remy Gordon’s best efforts to divert the effort in.

Wroxham were trying their best to keep the ball on the floor, with their Essex counterparts opting for the more direct approach over the top and down the channels.

This approach almost worked for Burnham after 12 minutes, Luis Tibbles coming to the rescue to smother Charlie Kirby’s effort after the midfielder had found himself free at the back post.

Wroxham then produced the best move of the game with 23 on the clock to almost take the lead.

Matt Halliday picked out Gordon with a raking 50 yard ball, the left winger controlling the ball before sending a dangerous ball across the six yards box that Sanha was just unable to connect with.

Cary was then seemingly brought down in the box but no penalty was given by referee Andrew Williams, before Wroxham had three chances in the space of a minute.

Sanha miscued on the edge of the box, before the clearance fell to Marsden who struck a 25 yard effort with the outside of his boot that was well tipped over by Godwin-Green.

The goalkeeper then almost went from hero to villain as he nearly diverted the resulting corner in off his gloves, before smothering it at the second attempt in a frantic 60 seconds.

Marsden looked far more comfortable in his normal right back berth and his forward runs down the wing were causing numerous problems for the Burnham defence, once of which resulted in a dangerous cross that went straight across the goalmouth and beat everyone in the last action of the half.

Wroxham made a quick start after the break, creating the best chance of the game as Jack Smith and Gordon combined after 46 minutes.

Smith picked the ball up inside the centre circle before playing a great through ball into the path of Gordon, who slotted his effort just past the left upright when he really should have hit the target.

Despite Wroxham’s positivity, it was Burnham who took the lead as The Yachtsmen’s set piece demons reared their ugly head once more.

Charlie Kirby’s 53rd minute corner found the home side queuing up at the back, with Nikki Beale rising highest to power his header into the back of the net.

As the temperature dropped, the tempo certainly didn’t as both teams went in search for a goal.

Tibbles made two fine saves to keep the game alive, first from Hunt’s left footed effort from 25 yards before Reece Brandon’s back post header was well stopped by the young goalkeeper.

Smith and Gordon then linked up again as the game moved into the final 20 minutes, the latter squandering another golden opportunity to level as his effort was struck straight at Godwin-Green.

Wroxham then got the equaliser they deserved with 13 minutes remaining, this time being the beneficiaries of a dead ball situation.

Gordon’s corner from the right landed right on Marsden’s head, the right back making no mistake from six yards to make it 1-1.

Richmond then bundled in Kirby’s cross with five minutes remaining as Wroxham were caught pushing for a winner.

And their final spirited riposte was not enough, with seven good chances including two from Marsden and Cary’s well struck effort against the bar leaving Wroxham bereft of luck and giving their opponents a slightly fortunate three points.
