Yachtsmen lose At Home To Redbridge

Adam Dennehey27 Oct 2013 - 12:07

Wroxham’s defensive woes deepened as three set pieces gave play-off hunting Redbridge a 3-1 victory at Trafford Park.

Despite an encouraging start from The Yachtsmen, it was the visitors who took the lead as Eliay Worrell’s corner was smashed in by Captain Daniel Smith after 30 minutes.

Joe Marsden – who was lively in the first half but faded away as the game progressed – drew things level from the spot after 43 minutes to give the hosts hope.

But two more set plays, one headed in on the hour mark by Patrick Damali and the other coolly finished off by Daniel Tenkorang in the final minute, sealed the win for the visitors.

In a sloppy affair at times, Wroxham’s attacking fluency never really got going as the more industrious Redbridge played to their strengths to inflict a third straight defeat for The Yachtsmen.

Wroxham made five changes from the side that lost heavily to Margate the weekend before, and it was one of these replacements – Tim Cary - that almost gave the The Yachtsmen the lead eight minutes in.

Joe Marsden picked out an inch perfect cross field ball from the left to find Cary, whose back post volley struck the right post before agonizingly rolling across the line.

Both sides looked dangerous in attack but it was home side who were creating the better stuff with their slick interplay.

Remy Gordon’s driven cross slipped through David McCartney’s hands and drifted wide, before the lively Marsden – given an advanced role in the absence of Stephen Drake and Paul Cook – cleverly found space before striking in a weak shot three minutes later.

A lack of attacking fluency meant that high balls into the box were Redbridge’s best chance of a goal, and they duly delivered from an Eliay Worrell corner after 30 minutes to break the deadlock.

A mass of bodies at the back post resulted in a strong header that Luis Tibbles smartly saved, only for the rebound to fall to Daniel Smith who smashed in from three yards.

The goal seemed to settle the visitors, with Ben Bradbury firing a 25 yard effort in at Tibbles, who had to tip the effort round the post with 38 minutes on the clock.

With the game seemingly limping towards half time, it took a forward surge from the impressive Marsden to take the game to Redbridge and ultimately level the scores.

Marsden ate up half of the pitch with a determined run to put the visitors on the back foot, before the ball found its way to Ross Durrant just inside the box, whose quick feet invited a clip from the Redbridge defence and earn Wroxham a penalty.

Marsden duly stepped up to convert the spot kick – his third of the season – to restore parity just before half time.

With both sides struggling to create any clear cut chances at the start of the second period, it was another high ball into the box that undone the Wroxham defence just before the hour mark.

A lofted free kick deceived everyone, allowing Patrick Damali to sneak in at the back post to place his header past Tibbles and give Redbridge a 2-1 lead.

The game was lacking any real fluency, with injury stoppages for both Tim Cary and Jordan King disrupting the flow further.

Clear cut chances were at a premium, with Abs Thomson wasting the best for Redbridge with 20 minutes left, scuffing his shot wide from 12 yards when through one-on-one.

Wroxham’s attack seemed bereft of ideas as the game neared it conclusion, with the visitors instead creating more as Smith almost bagged his second, only for the captain’s free header from six yards to bounce wide when it was easier for him to score.

And it was another set piece that put the final nail in the coffin as Redbridge grabbed their third at the death, a left sided corner falling to Smith, who laid the ball back for Daniel Tenkorang to coolly place his effort into the bottom right corner to cement the win.

Wroxham will have to dust themselves off quickly as they prepare to face runaway leaders VCD Athletic on Tuesday night.
