Wroxham Let Two-Goal Lead Slip To Draw With Barkingside

Adam Dennehey18 Sep 2013 - 14:42

Wroxham surrendered a two goal lead at home for the second successive week in a topsy turvy 2-2 draw against 10-man Barkingside.

The Yachtsmen began in spectacular fashion, Ross Durrant bagging two goals in the first five minutes in a dominant first half performance by the home side.

A red card for Paul Kavanagh for an elbow just before the break seemed to swing things further in Wroxham’s favour, but a spirited Barkingside found two goals in three second half minutes through Toran Senghoe to get themselves back in it.

And The Yachtsmen failed to find that killer touch in the final third in their pursuit for a winner, with the visitors holding out for a point.

The home side were dominant for long periods of the game, but failed to make the extra man count on many occasions to leave manager Pawel Guziejko visibly frustrated at the end.

The Yachtsmen made a whirlwind start, Ross Durrant bagging two goals in the opening five minutes to settle the home side.

A burst down the left produced him with his first, with his apparent cross drifting across the box and into the far corner to opening the scoring in peculiar fashion.

It was the left hand side that again proved fruitful to grab him his second, this time Remy Gordon producing the ball for Paul Cook, who’s shot was rebounded into the path of Durrant for the striker to pass into the vacant net.

Wroxham were dominating possession for much of the opening half, with Barkingside struggling to cope with their attractive ball retention.

Any chances the away side could muster were slim in substance, with a Matt Gunfer snapshot that landed just past the post the only opportunity of note.

Frustration was beginning to set in for the opposition, with some late tackles aided by the slick surface unsettling up The Yachtsmen’s dominant passing.

This frustration then reached boiling point as Barkingside were reduced to ten men just before the break.

With both teams waiting for a free kick, a fracas ensued between Wroxham’s Joe Marsden and Barkingside’s Paul Kavanagh, the visiting player aiming an elbow in the direction of the Wroxham man to sentence him to an early bath.

The sending off made for an open beginning to the second half, with Wroxham creating good chances through Durrant and Gordon before a 3 minute double salvo from Toran Senghoe turned the game completely on its head.

Two counters attacks undone the Yachtsmen in quick succession, the burly striker tapping in at the far post after a quick break down the right for his first, before finding space himself down the same side to round Luis Tibbles in goal and restore parity.

The game was becoming more stretched as the half wore on, with Wroxham lacking the killer instinct that was so apparent in the first half as they went in search for the winner, while the visitors continued to pose a threat with their counter attacking play.

And it was the visitors who almost grabbed a dramatic winner in the dying moments of the game, Sean Crossley with a header that was tipped over before a fierce ball in from the right clipping the bar in a frantic finale.

Wroxham now travel to Tilbury on Saturday, looking to overturn their recent run of seven league games without a win.
