Wroxham ease past bottom side Ilford

Tom Joyce14 Apr 2013 - 19:16

A 2-0 scoreline didn't reflect how easy Wroxham found it against bottom side Ilford at Trafford Park on Saturday.

Following a comfortable 1-4 away victory against second from bottom Redbridge in midweek, the Yachtsmen went in to this game in confident mood.

And it showed, specifically in the first 45 minutes when the hosts could easily have been 5 or 6 up by the interval.

Wroxham started the brightest from the off and opened the scoring inside the first 10 minutes when a corner delivered in by Ross Durrant found the head of Josh Carus inside the 6 yard box. The Wroxham centre half went on to guide a decent header past the Ilford goalkeeper and in to the back of the net on 7 minutes.

The hosts dominated possession and had a decent chance on 10 minutes to increase their lead when Thompson was found in the box only to have his effort on goal saved at the second attempt.

Wroxham continued to press the Ilford back four, which had a forward playing at centre half, and when Ross Durrant found his way round the back of the visitors defence on 20 minutes and had his shot parried into the path of the on rushing Ben Thompson, who tapped in from 6 yards, the home side look comfortable and felt they could humiliate the visiting side.

It was all Wroxham for the first 45. Jake Jessup in the Wroxham was more like a spectator than a goalkeeper.

And on 31 minutes Jamie Speller came so close to getting a third for The Yachtsmen when Ross Durrant delivered a superb pin point cross to pick out the Winger at the far post but the Speller guided his header inches wide.

Speller then had another glorious chance on 33 minutes when he was put through on goal by the very impressive Joe Marsden, but as Speller was about to pull the trigger an Ilford defender got back well to nick the ball off the Yachtsmen's Winger and prevent Speller from increasing the hosts lead.

Ilford were forced in to a sub on 35 minutes when Pattison was accidentally caught by Danny Self in a 50-50 aerial challenge. The Ilford player Pattison departed the field for Ibrovich.

Ross Durrant then smashed a superb volley from the edge of the area against the bar on 36 minutes. If his volley was an inch lower he would have been a contender for goal of the season.

Wroxham ended the half 2-0 up, although they had numerous chances to have out the game to bed well before half time.

The second half was of a slightly different nature to the first half, and although Wroxham continued to control the possession, they didn't really create many golden chances to increase their half time lead and put the game beyond Ilfords reach.

The second half was fairly quiet for half hour, especially on the field of play, but soon after Wroxham had made their first substitute on 61 minutes, bringing on Matt Blake for goal scorer Ben Thompson the game was stopped for a short period of time following an incident on the touchline. The linesmen on the near side flagged to get the referees attention, calling him over as he had been receiving abuse from the visitors manager. After a few words with the linesman, who continued to be threatened by the Ilford Manager, the referee showed the visiting Manager a red card and sent him to the stands.

The hosts then made their second change, replacing Matt Daniels for Angelo Harrop on 67 minutes, and soon after made their final sub by bringing off Jamie Speller for Ben Lewis, with no real opportunities for either side to report between the substitutions.

The first real chance of the second half came on 76 minutes when Wroxham were awarded a free kick wide on the left. The free kick was swung in to the near post and found Josh Carus unmarked but he couldn't glance his header on goal.

Then on 80 minutes Ross Durrant hit a sweet strike from about 22 yards but his shot on target was well saved.

Ilford had one of two real chances on 84 minutes when one of their forwards found space a time in the area to have a strike on goal which was saved well by Jake Jessup with his feet. And then Ilford nearly scored towards the end when a cross turned shot hit the post and somehow stayed out for a side who hadn't really threatened the Wroxham goal for 80 minutes.
