Batch upset by penalty claim

Batch upset by penalty claim

Chris Green1 Jan 2013 - 20:29

Wroxham boss David Batch was disappointed with a 3-2 defeat at home to AFC Sudbury in a match he though his side should have won.

The main talking point came in the 59th minute when the game was evenly poised at 1-1 and Wroxham striker Ben Thompson was clearly brought down in the visitors’ penalty area when he received a pass from Ross Durrant. Then a shot from Jamie Forshaw was well saved as Wroxham were on top and looked as if they might take the lead. But referee Jonathon Block waived play-on allowing AFC Sudbury to counter and Robbie Martin put the visitors back in front when he received a pass from Russell Pond and rode a couple of tackles before unleashing a fine shot in the top corner from 20 yards.
Wroxham had a good chance after 15 minutes from the first corner of the game when the cross fell for Matt Halliday with a gilt edged opportunity but as he turned from little more than 3 yards his header was straight at Sudbury’s ‘keeper Archer. In form Sudbury then mounted a couple of scoring chances themselves as first Ben Bowditch got the better of Josh Carus and his cross into David Cowley brought a smart save from Wroxham’s Micheal Hilton. Then a header from Antoine shaved the post on 26 minutes.
As play swung from end to end Wroxham were having problems keeping the ball and looked somewhat sluggish compared with the visitors who took the lead on 32 minutes. As the ball came into the area Jacob Brown slammed the ball into the net giving Hilton no chance.
Wroxham pressed forward and equalized 5 minutes later when a free kick from Remy Gordon caused panic in the Sundbury box allowing Josh Carus to hook the ball in the net from close range.
The goal lifted the Yachtsmen who showed more character as they got at the Sudbury defence. However Hilton still needed to be alert tipping over a cross from the right on 43 minutes as the score remained level at half-time.

Wroxham were certainly livelier in the second period and a volley from Ross Durrant on 57 minutes looked likely to end up in the top corner but Archer made a good save to deny him. Then the goal from Martin came and incensed the Wroxham bench as they thought their side were getting on top. Although the Yachtsmen equalised on 65 minutes when Ben Thompson scored from 12 yards in a goalmouth scramble they were still chasing the game when Sudbury broke again on 80 minutes. A cross from the right allowed Leon Antoine to get in a free header at the far post. Wroxham had a couple more chances when Durrant’s cross eluded both Andy Eastaugh and Thompson. They were also denied when substitute Matt Blake’s shot brought a great save from Archer on 89 minutes.
Wroxham deserved at least a point and the defeat opened up a five point gap with the visitors who were clearly elated by their win.
