The Yachtsmen so close to a point against league leaders

The Yachtsmen so close to a point against league leaders

Tom Joyce27 Mar 2013 - 21:31

Wroxham were denied a point when 87th minute substitute Moses pounced in the 90th minute to give Grays the 3 points.

Wroxham went in to the game against the joint league leaders, Grays Athletic, off the back of a good away point against Brentwood, and looked well up for the test from the off.

Grays Athletic got the game underway and had two early consecutive corners in the opening 5 minutes but nothing came from the set pieces for the visitors, who are on a remarkable unbeaten run.

Neither side created any glorious goal scoring opportunities in the opening 30 minutes of the first half. Andy Eastaugh came the closest to scoring but glanced his header just over the bar from a Ben Jones free kick which was delivered well in to the mix.

The best chance of the half fell to the visitors on 33 minutes when Jack West was played in through the Wroxham defence . The Athletic striker only had Jake Jessup to beat in the Wroxham goal but the on loan Lowestoft Goalkeeper got down well to prevent the opening goal with his feet.

Ben Lewis had a good chance on goal for the Yachtsmen, using his pace to its full potential, out sprinting the Grays left back but striking his effort on goal well wide.

Both sides were keen to attack but the majority of the first half was competed in the middle of the pitch. The teams showed their competitiveness and eagerness to win the football, and possession was fairly even for the first 45.

Grays had one last opportunity to go in a goal to the good, 1 minute in to added on time, when a low cross from the Grays right across the face of goal couldn't be diverted in by attacker Jack West.

HT - Wroxham 0-0 Grays Athletic

The second half started very similar to the first, with great tempo and menace from both teams. But neither side created anything of real threat in front of goal for the first 15 minutes.

Grays were forced into a sub on 59 minutes following a 50-50 challenge between Sweeney and Josh Carus, with the latter receiving a booking and Sweeney being replaced by Subuola through injury.

Wroxham then had a great opportunity to break the deadlock on 61 minutes when Rossy Durrant skillfully worked his way past the Grays left back, in to the area before delivering a low cross across the face of the goal which unfortunately Ben Thompson couldnt get on the end of to score the match's opening goal. A carbon copy of Jack Wests chance for Grays in the first half.

The visitors then came extremely close to scoring on 65 minutes when Thompson was back defending against two Grays players but could not prevent Brandy from finding his way in to the Wroxham area from the right before drilling a cracking left footed drive inches wide of the far left post.

With the Grays management team becoming very frustrated with proceedings on the pitch, and appearing to be very aggressive towards the officials and the Wroxham bench, they decided to make a change on 73 minutes when Newby replaced Carlos. At which time Wroxham also decided to make their only change of the game which saw Blake replace Cook.

But neither change made a real impact to the game, with nothing of real promise to note in the next 10 or so minutes.

But then Grays made the change of the game. With only 3 minutes of normal time remaining, Grays sent on striker Moses in place of West. And Grays went out all attack in the last few minutes, pressing the Wroxham defence all the way, looking for that decisive goal. But when Jake Jessup made an unbelievable point blank save on the line in the 89th minute, you just thought it would be the Yachtsmen's night, who had given everything.

But with the Wroxham team looking tiresome, Grays decided to pounce one last time when in the 90th minute the Wroxham back line were caught out, with Moses beating the offside trap, connecting on to a threw ball before poking home a 1v1 effort against Jake Jessup to give the visitors all 3 points and send Grays players and supporters in to raptures.
