An unconvincing performance from Wroxham saw them defeated 1-0 by Cheshunt in the Ryman League North Division One.
Wroxham made one change to the side which was defeated 4-0 to league leaders Maldon & Tiptree last weekend, with Danny Self coming in for Angelo Harrop who started the game on the bench. The Yachtsmen appeared to line up with a 4-1-3-2 formation.

This game wasn't one of the most entertaining matches which the supporters have experienced at Trafford Park this season.

Gavin Lemmon's effort on 6 minutes was the only real attempt on goal worth noting in the first 15 minutes. Lemmon picked up a clearance from a corner just outside the area, but blazed his shot well over the bar.

Neither side found their stride in the first 15 minutes, with the majority of the football being of a scrappy nature and battled out in the middle of the park, with both Goalkeepers finding themselves being more like spectators.

Chesthunt had their first real attempt on goal on 18 minutes. A free kick from just outside the area which was blazed well over Remi Matthews cross bar by Michael Deane.

Wroxham had a good opportunity to open the scoring on 22 minutes when a Matt Halliday defensive clearance put Jamie Forshaw through down the right but his cross towards Matt Blake at the far post was cleared by a Cheshunt defender for a corner, a set piece which the Yachtsmen were unable to do anything with.

Nothing of interest happened in the next 5 or so minutes but on 29 minutes Wroxham were caught asleep at the back when Tony Burke found his way behind Danny Self at right back and was played through on goal by one of his team mates. But Self recovered and made a remarkable tackle just as Burke was about to pull the trigger and slot home past Matthews.

Cheshunt stepped up a gear on the half hour and started putting more pressure on Wroxham's back 4.

On 32 minutes Cheshunt nearly made the most of a defensive back pass which troubled Remi Matthews when the ball took a nasty bobble on the Trafford Park playing surface. Luckily for the Yachtsmen there was no Cheshunt player on hand to tap the ball home in to an empty net and Matthews recovered. but Matthews was only able to play the ball to Danny Self at right back who was quickly put under pressure and closed down. Burke stole the ball off Self and put a good cross in to the box which Wroxham scrambled clear.

Wroxham had their best chance of the first half on 39 minutes from a corner, delivered in by Ross Durrant and attacked by 4 or 5 Wroxham players. But an attacking header destined for the goal was cleared off the line by Andrew West.

For the last 5 minutes of the first half the Yachtsmen were put under a considerable amount of pressure and had to do a large amount of defending. And on 44 minutes Cheshunt came very close to opening the scoring and sending the Yachtsmen in to the changing rooms 0-1 down. A half attempted Yachtsmen clearance found Tony Burke in space 10 yds out of the area, who was not closed down by the Yachtsmen and had time to take a couple of touches before striking the ball low and hard from 25 yds towards goal. Luckily for the Yachtsmen, Burke's shot which was destined for the bottom right hand corner took a minor deflection off a Wroxham player and sailed inches wide of the post.

Cheshunt had a chance to score from the resulting corner, when the Wroxham defenders miss judged their headers but a glancing header from a Cheshunt forward went well wide of Remi Matthews goal.

A lot of the play was very scrappy in the first half, with neither team playing pretty football. Possession was 50-50 for the first 40 minutes, but Cheshunt put a lot of pressure on Wroxham in the final 5 minutes before half time and came the closest to opening the scoring.

HT- Wroxham 0-0 Cheshunt

Wroxham made two changes at half time, although one was forced due to the injury of Danny Self. Self was replaced by Ben Lewis, and Striker Jamie Forshaw was replaced by attacking midfielder Angelo Harrop.

For the first 5 minutes in the second half, Wroxham attacked well. And on 50 minutes Remi Matthews accurate kick found Remi Gordon in space on the left who used his pace and drove at the Cheshunt defence. Gordon was then unfairly tackled but the referee gave the Yachtsmen the advantage as Matt Blake picked up the ball and continued the Wroxham attack, but Joe Clemo defended well to keep Blake away from goal and prevent Blake having any shot on goal.

Cheshunt then attacked against the run of play and opened the scoring on 53 minutes when David Hicks attacked down the right and pulled the ball back from the bar line in to the path of David Greene who slotted the ball past Remi Matthews and in to the bottom right hand corner of the goal. 0-1 to Cheshunt.

Wroxham needed to respond and on 60 minutes decided to throw on another attacking option in Ben Thompson who replaced defender Martin McNeil.

But Wroxham never seemed to get a foothold in this game and didn't create too many real goal scoring opportunities, with most of the Yachtsmen's attempts being of a long distance nature.

Ross Durrant had a shot on 62 minutes which sailed wide of the Cheshunt goal, and Gavin Lemmon's 25 yd free kick on 68 minutes also sailed the wrong side of the visitors goal.

Josh Carus was booked in between these two Yachtsmen attempts for a missed timed challenge on a Cheshunt midfielder.

Liam Foster replaced David Hicks on 70 minutes as Cheshunt looked to add a second.

Wroxham had another opportunity on 73 minutes but Blake couldn't make the most of a Ben Lewis good delivery and headed well over the cross bar.

Cheshunt then came close to adding a second on 74 minutes when Brennan had a strike on goal, from the left, which was only parried by Remi Matthews in to the path of Tony Burke but his rebound effort went wide.

Remi Matthews then required treatment when he was clattered in a mid air challenge from a Cheshunt player when he went to claim a high cross. Fortunately Matthews was able to continue after a couple of minutes treatment.

Cheshunt's Lee Brennan was then replaced by Matthew Mitchell on 80 minutes.

Wroxham looked to push forward in the final 10 minutes but created very little in front of goal, and on 89 minutes Remi Gordon's name was taken by the referee for a poor timed challenge on a Cheshunt player.

On 90 minutes Cheshunt decided to waste a bit of time by making their third and final substitution. Tommy Fletcher replacing Michael Deane.

And it was Cheshunt who came close to increasing their lead in stoppage time on two occasions, with two one on one attempts at goal, and if it wasn't for the bravery of Matthews in the Wroxham goal, diving at the feet of the Cheshunt fowards, they could have won the game two or three nil in the closing stages.

In the final few seconds of the match Wroxham had a claim for a penalty ignored by the referee when Ben Thompson was clearly shoved over in the penalty area but nothing was given and this frustrated the Wroxham bench and the home supporters. The final whistle went and Cheshunt were the ones travelling home victorious.

It just wasn't the Yachtsmen's day. They never really found their stride, didn't play much pretty football, with the game being of a scrappy nature, and never really troubled Williamson in the Cheshunt goal. Cheshunt weren't notably the better side but got the goal which decided the game.
