Wroxham's five match unbeaten run ends away at the League leaders

Wroxham's five match unbeaten run ends away at the League leaders

Tom Joyce10 Nov 2012 - 20:41

Wroxham suffered a torrid time away to leaders Maldon & Tiptree going down 4-0.

The Yachtsmen went in to this game on the back of two wins and a five game unbeaten run. But Maldon & Tiptree were a step too far for Wroxham, although there was no reason why the Yachtsmen couldn't have beaten the League leaders on one of their better days.

David Batch decided to name an unchanged side which beat Heybridge Swifts 3-0 in midweek. And for the first 20 minutes there was not much to tell between the two sides, with neither team creating any real opportunities or testing either keeper.

But on 21 minutes Maldon & Tiptree opened the scoring. Wroxham forced a corner from a Maldon & Tiptree attack which they were unable to clear convincely and a half attempted clearance from the Yachtsmen defence fell to Maldon & Tiptrees No.2, Billy Sendall, on the edge of the area who turned inside a Wroxham defender before drilling home a low shot from 18 yds across Remi Matthews and in to the bottom left hand corner, to make the score 1-0 to Maldon & Tiptree.

Wroxham responded well and attacked straight from the restart. Gav Lemmon was put through down the left and found his way in the area before shooting from a tight angle and forcing Maldon & Tiptree keeper, Joe Wright, in to a good save.

But Lemmon's opportunity to equalise, was the best chance the Yachtsmen had for the next 10-15 minutes, with the hosts notably stepping up a gear, making it very difficult for Wroxham to get a foot hold in the game, putting them on the back foot, forcing the Yachtsmen in to defending deeply, beating the Wroxham players to nearly every first and second ball, and controlling the play in midfield.

And on 28 minutes Maldon & Tiptree threatened the Wroxham goal again with Robinson cutting in from the left, shooting, and forcing Remi Matthews in to a good save down to his left.

More good midfield football and pressure from Maldon & Tiptree on 33 minutes saw their No.10, Chris Bryan, who created a lot for the hosts, play a neat ball through to Robinson who drilled his shot wide of Remi Matthews goal.

On 40 minutes Wroxham had one of their very few first half shots at goal when some tidy football played down the left between Blake and Harrop saw the latter play Ross Durrant in to space in the middle but his shot from 25 yds sailed over the bar.

Not much more to note for Wroxham in the remaining 5 minutes off the half, other than a tussle between Gav Lemmon and a Maldon & Tiptree midfielder which saw Lemmon cautioned following a couple of earlier words with the referee.

HT- Maldon & Tiptree 1-0 Wroxham

Wroxham came out after their half time team talk and started the second half well with a very attacking flow to their football.

However, it was Maldon & Tiptree who increased their lead on 52 minutes with their first attack of the second half. The hosts went forward after one of the Yachtsmen's many attacks early on in the second half. The ball was played from right to left, and Robinson was found unmarked out wide on the left. Robinson travelled in to the Yachtsmen area before going on the outside Halliday and drilling a low shot across Remi Matthews in the Wroxham goal, in to the bottom right hand corner. Another clinical finish from a Maldon & Tiptree player, against the run of play.

On 57 minutes Wroxham probably had their best chance of the game to get back in to the match when Matt Halliday received the ball just inside the hosts half on the right before swinging in a superb right footed cross in to the box which found Andy Eastaugh's head. But Eastaugh could not make the most of Halliday's delivery and guided his powerful header just over Wrights goal.

On 58 minutes the Yachtsmen decided to replace Ross Durrant with loan striker Christy Finch to add more attacking options up front.

And Matt Blake used his pace down the right a minute later, dribbling the ball in to the Maldon & Tiptree area before having a shot on target saved by Wright.

But it was Maldon & Tiptree who were the more clinical and took their chances well, and on 63 minutes a defensive mistake by Martin McNeil gifted the hosts their 3rd goal of the afternoon which all but finished off the Yachtsmen. McNeil missed timed a clearance which allowed former Colchester United player, Jamie Guy, through on goal one on one with Remi Matthews. Guy confidently rounded Matthews and slotted the ball home in to an empty net. 3-0 Maldon & Tiptree.

However the Yachtsmen did not let their heads drop, and created another great goal scoring opportunity on 65 minutes when Gav Lemmon ran down the right hand side attacking at the Maldon & Tiptree defence and dribbled the ball right up to the bar line before cutting the ball back across goal. But somehow the on rushing Andy Eastaugh was unable to guide Lemmon's cross in to the back of the net. It was not Wroxham's day!

Wroxham done a defensive swap on 68 minutes when Danny Self replaced Josh Carus, with the hosts also deciding to make a change, Wareham replacing the injured Bryan.

There was not much between the two sides for the next 5 minutes, with further subtitutions being made by both teams on 73 minutes. Jack Smith replacing Andy Eastaugh in the heart of midfield for Wroxham, and Ben Bradbury replacing James Robinson for the hosts.

A minute later Wroxham attacked well down the left, but a good left footed strike from striker Jamie Forshaw, from just inside the corner of the area, was well stopped by Wright, with Blake unable to turn the rebound home.

Maldon & Tiptree made their final substitute on 85 minutes, which saw Jordan Pavett replace Joe Gardner, before the hosts went on to score their fourth goal on 88 minutes. Jamie Guy scoring his second with a powerful far post header past Matthews, taking his chance well, and wrapping the game up. This added further misery to Wroxham's afternoon, and sent the Yachtsmen travelling back to Norfolk pointless!

It wasn't the most pleasant game by any stretch for the Yachtmen who gave the ball away far too easily and were second to every ball in the first half. Wroxham attacked with more fluency in the second half, but Maldon & Tiptree took their chances well and were a couple of gears higher than the Yachtsmen during the full 90 minutes, proving why they are top of the League.
