Wroxham rue missed chances

Wroxham rue missed chances

Chris Green20 Feb 2013 - 23:08

Wroxham had enough chances to win tonight's game at Needham but had to settle for a point.

As fog descended on Bloomfields it was difficult to see the far side of the ground for the first twenty five minutes but slowly it lifted.
Needham started brightly and a great run and cross down the left from the home side on 8 mins saw Jamie Speller tracking back to head clear under pressure.
At the other end, Danny Self drilled a low daisy cutter across the box and Needham forced the ball behind for the first corner after 12 minutes but it was wasted.
More good work from Ben Thompson saw him chase down the Needham left fullback to get in a shot which was saved lown down by Louis Johnson in the Needham goal.
In a fairly even half Andy Eastaugh brought down a Needham player midway in his half and from the free-kick, Sam Newson headed over.
On 35 mins Wroxham had a let off when Josh Carus missed a header to clear and the ball fell for Elliott Crowe to make tracks down the right; he passed to Newson who rounded Jessup only for his cross to be cleared before Keiron Leabon could convert.
Then Ben Thompson again did well to win the ball and charged forward to get in a shot at the near post which Johnson saved easily.
Wroxham were creating more chances as Thomson and Blake combined for the latter to get in a shot which he pulled wide.
The best chance of the half came on 43 minutes when Ross Durrant’s shot took a deflection and Johnson scrambled across goal to push the ball away off the post.

HT Needham Market 0 Wroxham 0

The fog had virually disappeared at the start of the second half with Wroxham applying more pressure in the opening minutes.
However Needham almost broke the deadlock when Ollie Fenn was allowed space to run from deep in midfield to set Ryan Charles away down the left. He passed to Elliott Crowe whose curling shot appeared to be heading for the top corner until Jake Jessup dived across goal to make a splendid one hand save to turn the ball round for a corner.
Then a long kick from Jessup forced a Needham defender to turn the ball behind for a corner to Wroxham. This brought three more corners in quick succession but the visitors were not able to take advantage.
Hunting in packs in midfield, Wroxham took command of the game as they constantly broke away towards the Needham goal but unfortunately the final shot was always missing. This included a good work by Ben Jones to win the ball and set himself up for a shot which went well over.
Throughout the half Wroxham had Needham on the back foot much to the frustration of home supporters who once again were unable to see their side win their first home league game of the season. Unfortunately Wroxham were unable to apply the finish touch which showed when Matt Blake got himself into a perfect position from Thompson’s pass but hit an air shot. When they did get through Johnson was always able to deal with any shot which came his way and resulted in him being awarded man of the match.
