Yachtsmen sunk by Mildenhall in season's finale

Wroxham Insider29 Apr 2012 - 14:16

Champions Wroxham lost to Mildenhall Town on Saturday in a disappointing performance.

With the trophy presentation before kick-off not helping the focus on the upcoming match the Yachtsmen fell to their heaviest defeat of the season.

Steve Holder put the visitors into the lead and then the league’s top goalscorer Andrew Wood inflicted the damage by claiming a hat-trick.

Strikers Paul Cook and Matt Blake were both on the score sheet as Wroxham briefly rallied.

Retiring goalkeeper Scott Howie was made captain for the day but he could do little to stop the Mildenhall goals.

The hosts looked sluggish from the start and were lucky not to concede within the opening minutes as striker Wayne Proctor burst through the Wroxham back-four only to be denied by the legs of Howie.

Wroxham were next to go close as a Matt Daniels ball across the face of goal bounced off defender James Paterson and onto a post.

David Cooper’s corner was met brilliantly at the near post by the head of Holder in the 16th minute as Wroxham were caught ball watching.

Cook managed to get Wroxham back on level terms despite appearing to foul full-back Cooper before bundling the ball past Josh Pope in the Hall goal.

In the 30th minute Wood claimed his first of the afternoon as he took advantage of some poor Wroxham defending to restore the visitors lead.

On the stroke of half-time Wood showed some neat footwork to fool his marker before firing low past a helpless Howie.

Gavin Lemmon and Ross Durrant were both hooked at half-time by manager David Batch and on came Gary Gilmore and Ben Thompson to inject some much need life into the Wroxham performance.

Substitute Thompson showing desire and passion when he came on fed ex-Thetford Town man Blake to pull a goal back for the champions nine minutes into the second half.

Thompson had a great chance to level the scores five minutes from time, but he blazed his effort over the crossbar when Pope was out of position.

Mildenhall punished the champions for that miss as a fine breakaway by Proctor teed up strike partner Wood for his 33rd goal of the season.
