Wroxham grab points

Wroxham grab points

Wroxham Insider21 Nov 2011 - 13:48

Three goals in the last eight minutes handed Wroxham an unlikely win in a pulsating encounter with Gorleston at Emerald Park.

Goals from Chris Sandford and Ali McKenna had given Gorleston a deserved 2-0 lead at half-time as the hosts totally dominated the opening 45 minutes.

But an improved Wroxham turned it around in the second-half with Danny Self the unlikely hero notching two goals including a dramatic injury time winner. Sub Ross Durrant had levelled the scores with a fine long range rocket before Self scored an almost carbon copy of Durrant’s strike from 30-yards to seal a massive three points for The Yachtsmen.

Wroxham chief David Batch said: “I would of been delighted with a point at half-time as we were so poor in the first-half. “Full credit to my players for the way they kept on going and we ended up winning the game - but in truth we were lucky to get away with it. “Credit as well to Gorleston they have been the best team we have played so far this season.”

Batch made just one change to his starting line-up that tore Great Yarmouth apart on Tuesday with Remy Gordon completely dropping out of the 16 to be replaced on the left flank by Craig Terrington.

The Greens nearly got off to the perfect start with four minutes on the clock as winger Steve Taylor’s close range effort came crashing off a post.

Gorleston, clearly in the mood, zipped the ball about with good urgency and they duly got their rewards in the 22nd minute. A deft flick from Mitch Forbes played in Sandford and he finished with much aplomb beyond the reach of Scott Howie.

McKenna nearly made it 2-0 after 30 minutes but Howie did well to hold the ex-Kirkley man’s powerful shot from inside the area.

However, McKenna didn't have to wait to long to add his name to the score sheet as just eight minutes later he found the net with a classy lob over the helpless Howie.

The Gorleston faithful were clearly buoyed by their teams performance as the half-time whistle approached, but none of them would of predicted what was going to occur in the second period.

Batch livened things up with the introduction of Durrant and within seconds of the re-start the substitution spurned a great chance when through on goal. But it was a sign of things to come as Wroxham galvanised themselves into a performance that was clearly lacking in the first-half.

Paul Cook and Andy Eastaugh both went close to pulling a goal back before Self scrambled home from close range to half the deficit with eight minutes to go.

The Yachtsmen with their tails up were really going for it and threw everything they had at the Gorleston goal. In doing so they nearly got caught on the counter but Liam Harvey-Cooper should have done better than pulling his shot wide when clean through on goal in the 88th minute.

Gorleston were left to rue that missed opportunity to kill the game as two wonder goals in two minutes from Durrant and Self at the death completed a memorable comeback .
