Urchins jolted by Deeks stunner

Urchins jolted by Deeks stunner

Chris Green19 Mar 2017 - 21:07

The Yachtsmen deservedly took a point from Hornchurch to move off the bottom on goal difference.

Wroxham at the bottom played well against a Hornchurch who were in Conference South a few seasons ago and are now 3rd in the Ryman North league table looking for a play-off place.
It could have been different had Martin Tuohy found the net in the first minute but Wroxham ‘keeper Elliott Pride tipped his header over and the resulting corner was cleared. A flick on by Tuohy to leading scorer Leon McKenzie spelt danger but he too fired too high.
Wroxham were battling back and went close when Ross Gilfedder flick goal-wards required Sam Mott to make a sharp save.
Then another chance for the visitors saw Gilfedder’s header go wide as they continued to catch Hornchurch on the counter attack.
Soon after the Urchins hit the post & Abs Thompson had a shot deflected around the post as the hosts continued on the offensive. Tuohy put Hornchurch ahead when the Wroxham defence failed to clear a long ball as the Honrchchurch player had a tap in on 29 minutes. But before this the assistant referee had flagged for the ball being out of play only for the referee to allow play to go on. The Wroxham players stopped seeing the flag raised and were caught out as Tuohy took advantage.
Wroxham were still in the game and Armani Schaar found space to get in a shot which was well saved by Mott.
Kenzer Lee went close with a header and a Thompson shot rebounded off a post on 51 minutes after he was released by a good pass from McKenzie. Thompson was then booked for a rash challenge.
Jack Guyton replaced Jack Newman on 55 minutes as Wroxham continued to press look for an equaliser. Alex Bentley hooked the ball clear and it required a superb tackle by Elliot Styles to deny the visitors.
However, Wroxham eventually drew level when Connor Deeks fired home from 30 yards on 75 minutes after the home defence failed to clear a Tom Rampling corner.
Wroxham survived a hectic final few moments with 5 additional minutes to deservedly take a point.
