Timely tonic for Yachtsmen

Timely tonic for Yachtsmen

Chris Green27 Dec 2016 - 21:02

A 57th minute goal from Wroxham's Jack Newman gave the Yachtsmen the victory and three much-needed points as they upset the formbook in this hard-fought derby.

It was easy to forget how tough a season it had been when Norwich United rolled in on a clear and crisp boxing day afternoon. A bumper crowd of 225 were buzzing with a little more excitement for what promised to be an interesting local derby.
Wroxham had been playing well at Trafford Park but with little reward, whereas the Planters had slowed a little recently after their impressive start in Ryman Division One North.
A new Yachtsman made the starting eleven. Christmas Eve signing Blake Saker starting at full back, bringing 500 games plus experience from Premier division Leiston. He joined Tom Rampling, Matt Halliday and Adam Plumstead in a back four in front of goalkeeper Callum Robinson.
In midfield Matt Cook and skipper Ben Lewis patrolled the centre with Armani Schaar and Craig Bussens out wide. Jack Newman slotted in the number 10 position behind striker Ross Gilfedder.
The Planters got us underway and the game settled into a pattern relatively quickly - the Yachtsmen having the majority of the ball without really making chances. United tried to threaten with quick breaks. And it was the Planters who had the first chance. Adam Hipperson worked a run down their left and crossed for Christy Finch but his contact was poor at the near post and Robinson gathered easily.
This brought Norwich United into the game, and they started to look a little stronger in 50 50 challenges, forcing mistakes from the Yachtsmen. Wroxham on the other hand looked keen to play the ball around, deliberately playing the ball short at goal kicks looking to stretch the Planters to try and create space behind.
Chances were few and far between. Plumstead cleared the ball for Wroxham after good work again down the Norwich left. The first corner was dealt with, but the second one following fell to Joe Jackson on the edge of the box but his effort was high, wide and not very handsome.
With Wroxham defending resolutely Norwich tried a 35 yard efforts. Wones effort took a bobble on the way to Robinson but he held on.
The Yachtsmen made their first chance of note on 20 minutes. A quick counter from Saker down the right, whose centre found Gilfedder but his effort hit the defender.
Norwich United continued to push though, a driven cross by Hipperson to Finch whose control, possibly with his hands, let in Tim Henery but his effort was still climbing as it went over the target.
On 26 minutes was our first card of the day. Jack Newman getting a yellow for a foul on Wones as the Planters tried to break. The second was only 2 minutes away as Ben Lewis saw yellow for a strong tackle in midfield.
The match came alive on 29 minutes. Former Yachtsmen Andy Eastaugh did his best impression of Joe Hart to deny Jack Newman. Eastaugh earned himself a yellow, the third in 4 minutes and conceded a penalty. Up stepped the usually reliable Gilfedder, but he sent his shot the wrong side of the left upright.
Wroxham were unaffected by this drama. Gilfedder won a foul in a dangerous position and New man's effort was well held by Andy Wilson.
On 37 minutes, Gilfedder thought he had opened the scoring. Bussens worked a cross from the left and Gilfedder headed in at the near post. The celebrations were cut short however for an offside flag.
The Yachtsmen continued to finish the half strongly. Schaar had an effort from the right of the box saved, the rebound falling to Newman whose effort was also saved. Wilson in the Planters goal definitely the more busy of the two number ones as the players went in for half time.
The second half started with Wroxham starting strongly. All their best work going through Rampling and Bussen on their left. These guys forced a corner early on, and as it was cleared it fell for Rampling who made a great connection but his effort went just over the bar.
The Planters were restricted to long range efforts. Jackson for example cutting inside Saker, but his effort was easily gathered.
On 57 minutes came the only goal of the game. The Yachtsmen put together a great build up and Schaar managed to get the ball to Newman in the box. He took a touch, turned and then rifled into the bottom left hand corner.
Wroxham were really bossing the game at this stage. Lewis typifying this by beating and battling 4 or 5 in midfield to get the ball to Bussens. He found Newman in the box, who played a one two with Rampling but was offside as he received the ball back. It was great football all round.
On 66 minutes came the first substitution. Plumstead left to be replaced by Nyadzayo. This meant the versatile Matt Cook dropped back into defence.
On 70 minutes the Planters had their first piece of real quality. Hipperson forced his way into the box, turning Ramping inside and out and leaving him on his back, but his shot from a narrow angle went over.
United kept pushing. A corner from their right was cleared to Radomski who had replaced Jackson. His low drive went just past the post.
As the game went into the last 15 minutes, and with the Yachtsmen efforts catching up with them it was wide open. Radomski was proving a real problem for the Wroxham defence. His ball in on 76 minutes was just over Henery in the box.
On 78 minutes the impressive Bussens made way for Baughurst as manager Damien Hilton looked to shore up the Yachtsmen for the last 10 minutes or so. His first action was to be pushed off the ball in midfield. This set the Planters on their way, and a ball in from their right found Henery but he shot over.
As we got to the business end of things, a few tempers began to fray. The two number 10s tussles in the Wroxham box, and as the ball was cleared it appeared Newman had been pushed to the floor, but the referee had missed it.
It was end to end stuff at this point. Baughurst drawing a fine save from Wilson after good build up from Nyadzayo and the classy Rampling.
With Wroxham defending for all their worth, Norwich United did well to carve out one more chance. A corner conceded by Halliday was delivered with great quality but Sam Watts spurned the opportunity, his free header going just over.
Wroxham came away with the spoils from what was an entertaining festive tussle. They are now 2 points away from being off the bottom of the league, and 6 from safety.
They head to Bury Town on Friday full of confidence.
