The Yachtsmen are now in danger of being cut adrift from the sides above who did manage to pick up points.
Ali Setirekli’s goal proved just enough as Haringey Borough held on through a nervy second half to beat Wroxham. The striker found the back of the net after 37 minutes, with Adrian Markus denied by the offside flag on no fewer than two occasions. But overall, it was a much better performance from the Yachtsmen.
Damian Hilton included Jordan Attree in the starting line up and also brought back Robbie Sweeney into the squad who hadn’t played since the FA Cup debacle at Deeping Rangers in August. Young Tom Rampling was also preferred at left back. Adam Plumstead and Ollie Ebbage were still injured.
Sam Gauntlett was pushed forward but after a strong challenge on 10 minutes he was unable to play any further part and Sweeney replaced him.
In the first half, Haringey were looking the stronger side on the new 3G pitch at Coles Park. It required some good saves by Man of the match Elliot Pride and hard work by his defensive colleagues to keep the home side at bay. But Haringey eventually took the lead on 37 minutes as the floodlights came on when Setirekli scored what proved to be the winner.
Hilton took off Attree at half-time who had struggled to make any impression and he was replaced by Cruise Nyadzayo.
Wroxham hit back strongly despite sitting at the foot of the table and it made for a tense second period.
Despite Wroxham’s endeavour they were unable to create many chances and it was Haringey who still boasted the best opportunities.
Markus was left thwarted by the post in search of his side’s second, while Setirekli also had the ball in the back of the net. He was denied by the offside flag, as Borough held on for the points.
Wroxham’s Ross Gilfedder looked good leading the line and holding the ball up but unfortunately they do not have the strike force to take advantage at present.
Only 22 paying customers watched Haringey v Wroxham last season at Tilbury. But the crowd this time was swelled by a number of aspiring football commentators involved in a football commentary workshop who had microphones at the ready hoping to become future Motsons &Tyldesleys! This may not have been the game for too much excitement but there were signs of better things to come.
