Wroxham upset the odds against leaders

Wroxham upset the odds against leaders

Chris Green16 Oct 2016 - 17:40

Wroxham defied the odds in this top versus bottom clash as a 78th minute penalty by Ross Gilfedder divided the teams.

But it was not enough to take The Yachtsmen off the bottom as teams above them also won.
This was a game of very few scoring chances but Wroxham had slightly the better of a poor first half.
Kyle Baker had an early chance for The Yachtsmen as he created space for himself on the edge of the area to get in a curler that didn’t have enough on it to cause any problems for Steve Phillips.
A long range shot from Jason Goodchild for Phoenix also went wide without troubling Wroxham’s keeper Elliott Pride.
The visitors had a good chance on 19 minutes when Alistair Gordan almost found striker Ricky Freeman only for Ben Lewis to nip in and put behind for a corner which resulted in two more before Wroxham finally cleared the danger.
Defender Aaron Sekhon was pulled up for holding Gilfedder and Kyle Baker’s free kick was turned behind by Lewis Mingle with Matt Halliday ready to pounce.
Soon after Phoenix skipper Mingle received the first booking for a foul which was later to be significant with a send off for a second.
A lovely pass from James Baughurst to Gilfedder enabled the Wroxham striker to get away but his touch was heavy as he lost the ball before getting in a shot.
Phoenix number 10 Gordon again featured when he was pulled down and took the free kick himself without causing any problem for Pride.
Dajon Golding switched to the right to see if he could get any more joy from Liam Clayton as he had been mainly well controlled by Charlie Norman down the left.
A poor free kick from Baughurst was easily cleared after Cruise Nyadzayo had been fouled. Nyadzayo then fouled a Phoenix player himself much to the annoyance of Wroxham boss Damian Hilton as Freeman almost scored with a header from the resulting free kick but his effort flashed wide just before the break.
There appeared to be little difference between the quality of the two teams given their positions in the table but eventually the game livened up. Wroxham made a substitution with Payton Swatman replacing Baughurst.
A cross from Nyadzayo caused a few problem for the Phoenix defence but they quickly broke to the other end where Golding had a chance but Liam Clayton did well to cover and clear up.
A little more pressure from Phoenix had Wroxham on the back foot for a while and there was plenty of head tennis.
A good run from Gilfedder looked likely to cause a few problems for the visitors but again his final touch let him down.
Two poor attempted clearances by Matt Halliday led to a punch out by Elliott Pride but straight to Golding whose return shot was just as bad and was skied well wide.
Wroxham broke quickly with a reverse pass from Swatman to Gilfedder who again fluffed his lines.
However the striker was eventually to make amends when referee Chris Reeson spotted a hand ball by Ryan Andrews on 78 minutes. Gilfedder took the kick and converted despite Phillips going the right way he was unable to get a hand on the striker’s well taken spot kick.
Phoenix were reduced to 10 men when Mingle was sent off for a second booking on 85 minutes.
Despite late pressure Wroxham held out for their second league win in four days.
