Yachtsmen off and running at the 13th attempt

Yachtsmen off and running at the 13th attempt

Chris Green13 Oct 2016 - 20:26

1st team gain confidence boosting first league win of the season at Witham Town.

Wroxham gained their first league win of the season as a first half effort from Davillion Katabana and a second half deflection from Kyle Baker's shot gave them all three points at Witham Town.
The victory was not enough to take them off the bottom of the table but, after being cut adrift at the bottom, they now sit just a point away from Soham Town Rangers. This confidence boosting win makes it just one defeat in six games and follows on from Saturday's win against Godalming Town FA Trophy.
The home side started the game well with Scott Kemp making some good runs down the left wing and one of these led to the opening goal on 20 minutes. The winger made strides down the flank to get in a lovely cross into the path of Tim Monsheju with an easy tap in past Elliot Pride. Wroxham looked to be up against it again when Lewis Payne hit the crossbar but if anything this was a turning point as they equalised within 12 minutes through Davillian Katabana. The new signing who scored on his debut against Godalming, scored again when the Witham defence failed to clear the ball and Katabana took advantage with a shot just inside the post. The Yachtsmen almost scored again before half-time but it was ruled off side.
Although Scott Kemp hit the post early in the second half and Nathan Koranteng & Ryan Charles had shots saved, it was Wroxham who won the game with a goalmouth scramble in the 81st minute. Sub Kyle Baker's shot was going wide but took a deflection off James Regis's boot. Although it went down as an own goal by the Witham scribe, Baker claimed it for his first goal of the season. This goal inspired young Yachtsmen as they contained any comeback from the home side who ran out of ideas.

Team boss Damian Hilton was overall pleased with the performance. "our young players were a bit naive in the first half and a few words at half-time saw them come of age" he said adding, "The new players including Matt Cook, Liam Clayton and James Baughurst are settling in and there is now some confidence growing in the side; if we'd had this squad from the start we would be alright".

Wroxham look to have turned the corner with this victory. To quote Radio Norfolk's Nick Bowler "wins are like buses, get one and another one arrives". Onwards and upwards!

Wroxham team: Elliott Pride Payton Swatman (Charlie Norman), Liam Clayton, Ollie Ebbage, Matthew Cook, Matt Halliday, Cruise Nyadzayo, Cassimiro Datocampol, Ross Gilfedder (Kyle Baker), James Baughurst, Davillian Katabana (Jack Guyton) Sub not used: Jake Platten
