Wroxhams wait for 3 points continues after another defeat, this time to Great Wakering Rovers. Despite a good performance and being in control for much of the match, the Yachtsmen were unable to create many clear cut chances. This, coupled with some goalkeeping errors presented Rovers with the victory, writes Darren Wiseman.
Wroxham started with Elliot Pride in goal, fullbacks were captain Payton Swatman and Liam Clayton. Playing at centre half were pairing Matt Halliday and Adam Plumstead. Midfield was Ben Lewis and Matt Cook with Cruise Nyadzayo and Kyle Baker on the wings. James Baughurst played just behind Ross Gilfedder leading the line.
Wroxham kicked off but it was Rovers who made the first chance. A cross from the left by Asante was met by Charlie Barlow but it was just wide of the near post. The Yachtsmen responded quickly with Lewis having a looping effort pushed over the bar following strong play by Gilfedder. The resulting corner was delivered low and easily cleared.
A tight first half saw few chances. Wroxham dominated possession and territory, but this hard work and effort did not bring them just reward. The biggest highlight was when the heavy rain announced itself with a loud rumble of thunder! This was only slightly more dramatic than when Gilfedder showed great skill and strength in the box to set up Baughurst whose shot was blocked. This rebounded to Baker whose first time effort was saved point blank by a great save from Charlie Huntley.
Wroxham were having great success down the right, Nyadzayo having his full back "on toast" as manager Hilton was pleased to tell him on a few occasions. Work down the right led to a chance for Nyadzayo but his shot skewed wide of the far post.
On 40 minutes, the game really came to the boil. Great Wakering worked the ball down their left and the ball was swung in low by Billy Johnson for Jacob Cleaver to beat his man at the near post and score past Elliot Pride against the run of play.
A rare sight this season at Trafford Park followed as Wroxham managed to conjure up an equaliser 4 minutes later. A cross from the Wroxham left saw Adam Plumstead leap highest to guide a looping header into the top left corner. The Yachtsmen faithful cheered loud and long out of celebration and relief.
The second saw all to play for and with rain it turned into a battle. Wroxham made the first real opportunity, Kyle Baker swung in a decent ball from the Yachtsmen left, Nyadzayo stretched to make contact but could only make enough contact to push the ball wide.
Rovers went close next. A great ball in saw Cleaver jump above his marker but he could not meet the cross. If he had you felt he would have to have scored.
With the game opening up, Baker took a knock in midfield. The play continued however with Nyadzayo in down the right. His cross come shot flew just wide of the far post when he may have done better squaring the ball into the box.
The hardworking Baughurst was replaced on the hour by Datacampol. Hilton sensing that reinforcements were needed in midfield to continue to compete in what was becoming a heavy pitch and hotly contested area.
Great Wakering took the first step to winning the war on 62 minutes. A cross deep into the area from a corner looked like it should be dealt with, but Elliot Pride spilled it under pressure into his own net. The Trafford Park faithful could hardly believe another combative performance would again go unrewarded.
Wroxham kept plugging, their spirit epitomised by Lewis. His strong pressing up the pitch saw him win the ball. The ball was worked out to the left, the cross in was cleared straight to Lewis but his shot went straight down the keepers neck when Lewis may have deserved more.
On 67 minutes Baker was replaced by Ben Fowkes and then 4 minutes later Jordan Rocastle came on for Matt Cook as the Yachtsmen chased the game. As the game restarted Gilfedder and Rocastle combined to play in Lewis but he was tackled just as he was pulling the trigger. The following corner just eluded Plumstead, and when it was played in again it went to Plumstead again, but his shot was too tame to trouble Huntley, whose handling was exemplary, even in the rain.
Rovers sealed it with the goal of the game. With 80 minutes gone Cleaver hit a great diagonal ball from the right on halfway, Pride came and went back for Johnson to volley on the edge of the box and to lob the retreating keeper.
Wroxham kept going and fashioned one more chance. Datacampol won the ball in midfield and played it wide to Swatman. His delivery was great and Gilfedder was in, but he failed to make sufficient contact to score and his header flashed wide.
Many more battles await Wroxham if they are to manage to get off the bottom of the league, but you sense if they can start to take their chances they will begin to climb up the table.
