On a wet Saturday afternoon the Yachtsmen found themselves in a jam as 15 crazy second half minutes saw Maldon and Tiptree score 4 goals. The defeat being Wroxham's seventh loss on the bounce.
Wroxham had Elliot Pride missing due to family commitments so they started with Nathan Pauling in goal. In defence was Payton Swatman, Jake Platten, Ben Lewis, and Matt Halliday. In midfield was Cassimiro Datacampol and David Hinton with Kyle Baker and Kevin Coyle on the flanks. Ross Gilfedder led the line with Sam Harty just in behind.
The Jammers kicked off towards the car park, but with ball going out several times early on the start of the game had a very stop start feel. When play finally got going Maldon & Tiptree had the first real chance. Good work on the left Swatman beaten, the ball in was just to strong with Liam Nash lurking dangerously.
Wroxham made chances too.Ross Gilfedder laid off well to David Hinton after intricate build up play, but his shot went just wide of the post. Moments later, Gilfedder did well again, his low ball in from the left was looked dangerous, but unfortunately Wills in the Jammers goal just beat Kyle Baker to it.
Controversy followed, a cross from the right seemed to give Gilfedder a great chance to score, but he was pushed over. Much to everyone's amazement, referee Mr Kilbourn gave nothing.
On such moments games can change. On 15 minutes Maldon and Tiptree attacked down the right, the ball was delivered low to the near post and it was converted by the lively Rhys Henry via a deflection.
Despite this setback Wroxham pressed on. A good period of pressure followed with a number of balls delivered well into the penalty area. This spell culminated in a great overhead kick from Gilfedder that went over the bar.
On 21 minutes, Wroxham earned themselves a corner. Good delivery followed and Datacampol rose well to win the header. Unfortunately he was unable to make a decent contact and the effort went wide.
On 26 minutes the Jammers nearly scored a second. Great interplay got them into the Wroxham penalty area, but fortunately for the Yachtsmen Henry hit the post from 6 yards. Shortly after, Maldon and Tiptree had the ball in the net but everyone in blue was relieved to see the referee's assistant had raised his flag.
The game started to get quite stretched and the chances flowed. Wroxham's best moved saw a good ball pumped out to the left for Baker to hit a wonderful volleyed cross which was perfect for Gilfedder who headed just wide. Moments later Kevin Coyle flummoxed the full back to get the ball to Hinton but his shot well saved. The corner that followed this time met Datacampol who did not fluff this chance. His great drew a brilliant diving save from Wills, who was by far the busiest of the keepers.
Just before half time Wroxham would go close again. A short corner to Hinton sent him off a mazy run which culminated in a cross come shot that had to be cleared off the line. Wroxham finished the half strongly and Maldon felt they were holding on.
Words of "keep doing what you are doing" you believe had to have been spoken by manager Hilton at half time, but all these good intentions went out the window as a goalkeeping error sparked a crazy 15 minute spell of kamikaze football from the Yachtsmen. A long hopeful cross was pumped into the Wroxham box and Pauling came a long way to claim to get there but didn't make it and Adam Mills had an empty net to head into.
Within a minute it was 3. A ball from the right went all the way across the goal without being dealt with and Mills was there again at the back post to head through Pauling's legs.
3 minutes it was later it was 4. A quick break had Maldon and Tiptree 3 on 1 with a Wroxham defender. Pauling came out to deal, the ball was played across to Henry and the keeper tried to get back but lost his footing, leaving Henry to slot in his second with one of the easiest goals he will score.
Wroxham to their credit kept plugging away. Great play from their man of the match Ben Lewis played in Harty but his effort was blocked.
On 57 minutes the tin hat was put on it as Pauling's clearance charged down by Sam Newson who chased it down to finish into an empty net from a tight angle.
On 63 minutes Wroxham made all three of their substitutions . Rocastle, Lincoln and Fowkes coming on for Platten, Halliday and Baker. The game had almost a training ground feel as the Jammers took their foot off the gas to see out time.
On 78 minutes Datacampol slipped whilst under pressure from Liam Nash, and he fell on the ball, using his hand to ensure his opponent didn't get away. He earned himself the only booking of the day
Maldon and Tiptree brought all three of their sub's on after 79 minutes and unfortunately for the Yachtsmen this re-energised them, and a sixth came in the last minute as one these sub's, Tyler Brampton, was able to tap in a cross from the left at the far post.
So a second half to forget as a not so magnificent string of seven defeats in a row was drawn up. Damien Hilton needs to find goals to go with some dominating play, otherwise a win will be a long way away. The effort and endeavour is still there, so the hope is that the season can start for real next week at Ware.
