The Wroxham faithful left Trafford Park scratching their heads as to how the Yachtsmen had yet again turned in a good performance but with nothing to show for it.
Wroxham lined up with Elliot Pride in goal, captain Payton Swatman, Tom Rampling, Ben Lewis and Ollie Ebbage at the back. The midfield of Jordan King, Cassimiro Datocampol, Cruise Nyadzayo and Ben Fowkes trying to service Kyle Baker and Jack Guyton up front. The team being depleted due to work commitments and other players unavailability for various reasons
The first 30 minutes was full of crisp passing and chances, all made by Wroxham. Jack Guyton was denied on 10 minutes by the Brightlingsea goalkeeper when he should have scored. A shot from Cassimiro Datocampol on 17 mins took a deflection which nearly surprised the keeper, but rather than getting what their play deserved the first half hour saw the Yachtsmen 2-0 down.
The first goal was a moment of brilliance as Ricky Griggs rifled in from 25 yds out, a goal coming completely against the run of play. It was in the 23rd minute, following a throw in on the left for the R's the ball broke for Griggs who unleashed a howitzer of a shot past the despairing dive of Elliott Pride.
The second came 5 minutes later, a simple looking gather for Pride from a cross from the left turned into a terrible mistake, leading to Phil Kelly bundling the ball over the line, much to the shock of all the Wroxham players and supporters.
On 31 mins, manager Hilton changed personnel. Fowkes being replaced by Garrod. This could not however stop Wroxham losing the wind from their sails. It took 10 minutes for the Yachtsmen to make another chance. Good work on the left by Garrod, a ball in but Baker's looping header was easily gathered.
Garrod had the last chance of the half. His 30 yard effort rising over the bar. As the players trooped off they looked rightly downhearted with nothing to show for their efforts.
Wroxham showed great character as they kept going to the final whistle. Rocastle, on as a 51st minute substitute replacing Nyadzayo, with a skilful run and finish which saw a goal line clearance within 10 minutes of his introduction.
As the game opened up Wroxham were denied a clear penalty. Garrod taken down when shaping to hit a cross, but the referee was unmoved.
Pride redeemed himself somewhat for his earlier mistake when in the 70th minute he spectacularly pushed Tom Richardson header round the post.
In the 75th minute, good work from the tireless Baker produced a quality delivery from the left but Garrod headed wide.
On 80 mins Condon broke into the box for Brightlingsea and Tom Rampling was adjudged by the referee's assistant to have brought him down in the area. Jake Turner stepped up but he skyed the penalty with the ball going so far neighbour Barry will be still looking for it in his garden!
Wroxham kept on plugging away and in the 88th minute a long throw led to their final chance. Rocastle bundling the ball wide after the ball bounced around in the area.
However all the good play and endeavour could not lead to a goalfor Wroxham. The Yachtsmen will need to pick themselves up quickly and hope to get their season up and running away against 8th place Aveley on Saturday.
