A Gavin Lemmon long range effort with 10 minutes to go wasn't enough to complete a come back, as AFC Sudbury get ever close to winning the league.
Elliot Pride remained in goal for the Yachtsmen; Joel Potter, Nick Bailey, Aarron Taylor and Michael Sommerfield all started in defence, whilst Steve Taylor, Jack Garrod, David Hinton, Tom Cullumbine and Sam Harty stated in midfield, which saw Nick Davey start up front on his own. Jordan King, Lewis Sturman and Gavin Lemmon all started on the bench.
Both teams started well, in the first minute of the game Wroxham were close to forcing the first save of the game. Tom Cullumbines shot from the left hand side smashed against the face of a Sudbury defender. The league leaders then countered quickly, as the ball found its way to Joe Maybanks on the edge of the area, the winger took a touch before placing past Pride and into the bottom right hand corner of the net to make it 1-0. Five minutes later, Maybanks nearly got his second of the game, as a ball over the top of the Wroxham defence was met with a touch down by Maybanks who blasted the ball well over the bar. The opening 15 minutes saw AFC Sudbury control most of the possession. The pressure then told again 2 minutes later. Ben Robinson saw his cross from the right hand side cleared, but only as far Jack Newman, who had just been brought on as an early substitute. Newman then put in from close range to give the Yachtsmen an up hill climb from then on. 2 minutes later, Luke Callander very nearly made it 3-0, as his mis hit from the edge of the box rolled out for a goal kick, narrowly missing the right hand post.
The away side then tried to pick up their game. 25 minuets in good pressure from Tom Cullumbine on the right hand side forced a mistake from a Sudbury defender. Cullumbine then passed the ball to Nick Davey on the edge of the area, who's attempted chip looked to be going in, however a strange bounce on the 3G surface took the ball agonising wide. 2 minutes later Cullumbine and Davey linked up well on the right before Davey's deflects effort from the edge of the area was comfortably saved by Marcus Garnham in the Sudbury goal. Wroxham were then forced into the first substitution of the game, as injured Cullumbine made way for Jordan King. Joel potter then eased past a defender before playing a teasing cross into the box, however the ball was caught by Garnham and sent up field. 5 minuets later a scramble in the Sudbury box saw Wroxham go agonisingly close again, as Stephen Taylor, Nick Davey and Sam Harty all saw their shots blocked by the heroics of Garnham in the Sudbury goal.
Wroxham kept up the pressure towards the end of the first half. Steve Taylor hassled a Sudbury defender which won a corner for the visitors. The resulting corner was played in by Jack Garrod, and was cleared up to the edge of the area. The ball then fell for Sam Harty, however the midfielder smashed the ball over the bar. Aarron Taylor then put in a last ditch challenge up the other end of the pitch, as the centre back slid in on Callander and stopped him in his tracks. With 2 minutes remaining of the first half, Jack Garrod saw his 30 yard effort go well wide of the left hand post. Jordan Blackwell and Callander both had efforts put wide of Elliot Prides goal in the final minute of half, before the referee blew his whistle.
The start of the second half saw AFC Sudbury nearly replicate the start of the first, as Craig Parker played the ball behind the Wroxham defence and into the path of on running Jordan Blackwell who's shot was smartly saved by Pride as the ball was parried out for a corner. The corner was curled in, and was met by a volley from Parker who couldn't keep his shot down and was rifled over the bar. 5 minutes later Jack Newman's toe poke just inside the Wroxham penalty area was collected at ease by Pride. A few minutes later Jordan King played a fantastic cross field ball to Jack Garrod on the right hand side, Garrod then pulled the ball back to Sam Harty who's effort from the edge of the box was deflect out for a corner. 2 minutes later Hinton and Harty linked up well on the edge of area and won a free kick in a promising position. Michael Sommerfields free kick was curled over the bar, not troubling Garnham in the Sudbury goal.
Nick Bailey then picked up the first yellow card of the game as he stopped Sudbury from counter attacking them from the previous free kick. 3 minutes later, Jack Garrod saw a low cross from the right hand side force havoc in the Sudbury penalty area before getting put out for another corner for the Yachtsmen. Sam Harty was then replaced by Gavin Lemmon as the away side hoped to claw themselves back into the game. After the substitution, Nick Davey saw two long shots in the space of 5 minuets narrowly miss the goal.
With 13 minuets remaining, Gavin Lemmon found space 30 yards out, before sending a low shot towards goal. The ball went into the bottom left hand corner of the net and made it 2-1 to the league leaders. The Yachtsmen then stated to flood med forward as 2 minutes later Steve Taylor nearly found an equaliser. Gavin Lemmon's pass to Taylor saw his shot from the edge of the box saved to the right of the goal. A few minutes later Nick Bailey linked up with Jack Garrod, on the left had side. Garrod's cross was then cleared up the pitch and away for safety. With 2 minuets left on the clock, Nick Davey was fouled on the edge of the area and a free kick was awarded to the visitors. However Jack Garrod's strike went sailing over the bar and was the last action of the game.
Overall, it took some time for the Yachtsmen to get a hang of the playing surface, and after a poor opening 20 minuets, Wroxham controlled the possession in parts but were always going to find it difficult after conceding two goals against the side who sit at the top of the league.
