Lewis Down's spectacular goalkeeping display for Witham meant both sides in the bottom half of the table finished all square at Trafford Park, writes Tom Wardle.
Wroxham were handed a massive boost prior to the game as a number of players who were unavailable for this weekend’s game were able to secure release from work in time to play. A couple of them namely Jack Garrod and Jordan King arriving only minutes before kick-off having to take a place on the bench. Aarron Taylor was also passed fit and was able to take up his position alongside Josh Carus in the centre of Wroxham’s defence. Lewis Sturman and Joel Potter came into the midfield. Wroxham’s goalscorers from Tuesday night Michael Sommerfield and Jamie Forshaw both started up front.
Both teams started well in the opening 15 minutes of the game but it was the away side had the first chance of the game. Michael Osei's cross from the left hand side was overhit and went over everyone and out for a throw in. 5 minutes later, Wroxham’s Steve Taylor hit a volley from the edge of the area which was firmly caught by Lewis Down in the Witham goal.
20 minutes in, David Hinton's free kick from the right hand side was met by the head of Josh Carus whose powerful header was magnificently saved by the fingertips of Down. Joel Potter then raced down the left hand side before seeing his cross go over everyone and out for a Witham goal-kick. 25 minutes in some good play between Jamie Forshaw and Michael Sommerfield saw the big striker brought down on the edge of the area. The resulting free kick by Sommerfield skimmed the right hand post narrowly missing the top right hand corner.
Mid way through the first half the Yachtsmen started to dominate possession with a good move down the right saw Jackson Ramm beat the Witham full back before whipping the ball in. Lewis Down managed to come out and snuff out the danger. 5 minutes later Steve Taylor saw a cross from the right cleared by Lance Akins, but only as far as Jackson Ramm. His cross back into the area was met by the head of Sommerfield but the header landed straight into the hands of Lewis Down. The ball then fell kindly for Jamie Forshaw just inside the penalty area but his toe poke shot was fantastically saved to the right of Lewis Down.
Just before the end of the first half, Witham had a chance to go ahead but Tyler Kemp's free kick from the edge of the area was blasted high over the bar.
At half time the Yachtsmen made their first substitution as Lewis Sturman was replaced by Jack Garrod. Straight from kick-off, Michael Sommerfield went around two Witham players before getting his shot off from the edge of the area. His shot though was palmed away by Lewis Down once again.
5 minutes later Witham had their best chance of the game to take the lead as Koranteng's run into the area ended with a shot from the edge of the six-yard box. Elliot Pride pulled off a magnificent save with his feet and the chance was gone. Jamie Forshaw then went close, but saw their shot deflected and go out for a corner. Mid-way through the second half a controlled ball through the Witham defence by Nick Bailey saw Jack Garrod shooting from an extremely tight angle. His powerful shot was saved again Lewis Down. This time with his feet.
Wroxham then had an opportunity to win the game as Jamie Forshaw latched onto a through-ball before rounding the Witham goalkeeper. With seemingly an open goal, Forshaw placed it towards the goal but somehow Lewis Down got back and managed to block Forshaw's shot and put it out for a corner.
With 7 minutes remaining Jordan King came on and replaced Jamie Forshaw as Damian Hilton tried to inject some fresh legs and to get the winning goal, however it was not to be.
In injury time Witham’s Lance Akins received his second yellow card which left the away side to play the final few minutes of the game with 10 men.
Overall, 0-0 was a fair result but Wroxham had the majority of the chances on a bobbly pitch., but on the positive side, will take a point from a team which lay above them in the table. Wroxham hope to keep up this good run of form on the long trip away at Phoenix Sports next Saturday.
