No Christmas cheer for Yachtsmen after another defeat on the road

No Christmas cheer for Yachtsmen after another defeat on the road

Adrian Gowling26 Dec 2015 - 21:17

Wroxham fell to another defeat on their travels as a late goal by Salim Relizani took all three points for Soham.

In a game bereft of chances, a goal from Salim Relizani in the 81st minute won all three points for Soham.

Wroxham lined up making three changes to the side that drew 1-1 against Phoenix Sports. Jackson Ramm came into the back four at right-back for the first time since his lengthy suspension with Stephen Taylor switching across to the left side. The change meant that Daniel Foreman was the unlucky player who dropped to the bench. Jack Guyton and Ashley Jarvis were recalled at the expense of the injured Danny Beaumont and the unavailable Seamus Kelleher. Jack Garrod returned to the squad and was on the Wroxham bench.

Soham kicked off the first half with a strong wind behind them and the gusts had an effect on the play of the first half where through-balls more often than not were drifting straight out of play. Lining up for the home-side was former Norwich City and Manchester United midfielder Luke Chadwick and the majority of their play involved him. A free-kick after 5 minutes, following a foul on Chadwick, was the first opportunity for Soham but the Wroxham wall blocked the initial kick and Ross Paterson’s follow-up went well wide.

Wroxham’s first chance came from a Jamie Forshaw corner. The wind held the ball up and Ashley Jarvis was involved in a scramble in the 6-yard box as his goal-bound shot was blocked away by George Lawton in the Soham goal. Wroxham’s next chance came in the 9th minute. Again Jarvis was involved as he played in Nathan Stone. Unfortunately, Stone’s shot was straight at the keeper and the chance was gone.
After 19 minutes, Forshaw was set free down the right as he played a 1-2 with Stone. His dangerous cross was just too high as Jarvis could not get enough on the ball to put it on target. Soham were getting involved in the game and had the best chance to open the scoring on 22 minutes. A Chadwick corner reached Ryan Sharman whose header was cleared off the line by Jack Guyton perfectly positioned on the back-post. As the half progressed, Soham were looking the likely side to take the lead. Ben Sawyer was causing problems down the Soham left and he beat 3 players as he entered the Wroxham penalty area but fortunately the ball ricocheted back to Elliot Pride.

In the 43rd minute, Wroxham had an excellent chance to steal a lead. A quick break allowed Wroxham to have a 3v3 as Jarvis carried the ball into the Soham half. His shot though was blocked by the Soham defender and the opportunity was gone.

The second-half began and Wroxham had an excellent shout for two penalties turned away by referee Mark Wardell. A powerful shot by Stephen Taylor from outside of the area appeared to strike the hand of the defender but despite the appeals of the visitors there was nothing given. Stone then twisted the Soham defence and was brought down in the area but again the referee turned down the claims. Stewart Larter then introduced Jack Garrod for the hard-working Guyton to try to put pressure on the Soham defence.

After 65 minutes, Wroxham were lucky to escape as another Chadwick corner caused problems in their area. Pride making a fabulous block-save to keep the game level. The former Premier League winner was the most creative player on the pitch as, from another of his crosses, a diving header from Marcus Hall was just wide of the Wroxham net.

On 81 minutes another free-kick by Chadwick proved to be the match-winner. The initial free-kick was blocked but it fell to Relizani in the area and his powerful shot went between the keeper and the post to take the lead.

As the game was drawing to a close, Larter sent on Daniel Foreman and Lewis Sturman to release Michael Sommerfield to push forward. And in injury time it almost worked as a header by Stephen Taylor almost let in Foreman but the keeper just got to the ball ahead of him. Soham then used the experience of Chadwick to see out the game as Wroxham succumbed to another defeat and no points gained.
