The Yachtsmen's positive performance wasn’t enough to stop 3rd place AFC Sudbury going home with the points with two goals from Joe Maybanks and Liam Wales whilst Nathan Stone was on target for the home side. AFC Sudbury's performance at Trafford Park was smoother than their journey home as their coach broke down on the A11 near Attleborough. Players and fans had to retreat to the comfort of Mr D's Diner as they awaited rescue and a replacement coach from Sudbury giving them a late night return to Suffolk.
The Wroxham team saw changes from the team that started in the loss against Great Wakering Rovers last week. Nathan Pauling kept his place in goal, as Elliot Pride still remained sidelined. Stephen Taylor replaced Mac Gee and went into right back, but the centre back pairing of captain Andy Howell and Matt Halliday stayed the same. Seamus Kelleher dropped from the midfield and into left back. Jordan King replaced Ollie Ebbage in midfield, which otherwise remained unchanged, with Jamie Forshaw, Lewis Sturman and David Hinton. Danny Beaumont replaced Ashley Jarvis who dropped onto the bench, and partnered Nathan Stone upfront.
AFC Sudbury started the better side and creating a lot of the early chances. Liam Wales shot in the opening minutes of the game for the visitors was blasted over the bar. Nathan Pauling was then called into action as Joe Maybanks saw his shot comfortably caught by the Yachtsmen keeper. Wroxham then put the ball in the back of the Sudbury net, but referee Darin Geary ruled it offside, Jordan King and Danny Beaumont linked up well before finding a pass to Nathan Stone who smashed the ball in the net but didn’t count. On a very wet afternoon with intermittent hailstorms regularly sending the crowd for cover, the visitors had the better of the next 15 minutes, Craig Parker saw his shot well saved down to the keeper’s right, Parker was again left frustrated, as a fantastic passing move in between the Yachtsmen defence was finished by Parker whose shot was caught by Pauling.
The Yachtsmen began to rack up a few chances to score. After 20 minutes gone, the ball fell to Stephen Taylor on the edge of the box, but he failed to keep the ball down under the bar. Wroxham then had another chance to score on the counter attack, Jamie Forshaw drove forward with pace, the midfielder then played the ball forward to Danny Beaumont, who cut inside the defender and sent the ball towards the goal, but the shot skimmed the top of the crossbar. However, after Wroxham were getting a foothold in the game, Joe Maybanks received the ball to the left of the box, the Sudbury number 11 saw his shot sail into the far right corner of the net as the Wroxham defenders stood off to give the visitors the lead. 10 minutes later Sudbury doubled their lead, a scramble in the box between the players resulted in Liam Wales sneaking in at the back post and poking in from close range as the Wroxham defence were unable to clear.
Wroxham started the second half like a completely different side; Michael Sommerfield returned for the Yachtsmen and replaced Seamus Kelleher who had suffered a nasty incident with a pitch barrier in the first half. Jamie Forshaw saw his shot from the edge of the visitor’s box deflected and narrowly go round the post and out for a corner, Jordan King then put the ball in the back of the net, but was again ruled offside. However after 10 minutes of the restart, Michael Sommerfield played a beautifully weighted pass over the top of the defence and straight into the path of Nathan Stone who pounced on the ball to give Wroxham hope and bring some comfort to the chilled Wroxham faithful. The Yachtsmen kept the pressure on for the majority of the second half. Jordan King’s shot from the edge of the penalty area was brilliantly saved down to the keepers left, Stephen Taylor then saw his shot from close range blocked on the line and agonisingly roll out for a corner.
Wroxham made their second change of the afternoon, as Ashley Jarvis replaced Jordan King, as the Yachtsmen were trying to find that equalising goal. 5 minutes later the home side made their final substitution as Jack Guyton replaced Danny Beaumont. Wroxham kept up the pressure but couldn’t find the decisive touch. Nathan Stone’s cross near the left hand corner flag very nearly went into the top right corner of the goal before Marcus Garnham the Sudbury keeper got his finger tips to the ball and direct it over the bar. The home side then had their final chance to equalise in the 5 minutes of additional time. A fantastic run from Lewis Sturman saw him brought down on the edge of the area, the referee played advantage but Nathan Stone was then brought down in the box, however the referee pulled it back to the incident on the edge of the box and Wroxham were only given a free kick. Jamie Forshaw was eyeing up the goal from exactly the same position that he scored a week ago. The former Subdury player was unable to replicate his free kick as the ball sailed high and wide. The referee then blew his whistle which carried on the poor run of results for Wroxham.
Overall, Wroxham played a lot better than they have done in previous weeks but couldn’t manage to gain any points but Manager Stewart Larter can take a lot of positives from the game. The Yachtsmen are finally getting back to a fully fit squad, with the return of Michael Sommerfield and Stephen Taylor this week, as the return of senior players do make a lot of difference to the squad.
Wroxham will be looking for a return to winning ways in the league next week at Cheshunt who lie 7th in the table. Prior to that they would hope to get a boost as their 4th Round Norfolk Senior Cup tie against Great Yarmouth is scheduled for Tuesday night at Trafford Park (kick off 7.45pm). The only caveat is that the pitch passed two inspections on Saturday and the weather will need to improve to allow repairs from Saturday's game to be made.
