Nick Davey left it late to score what was to be the winner in a well fought game, as the blue of the Yachtsmen sailed away with 2 wins in 2 games since the appointment of Damian Hilton. The latest win came against a Tilbury side who sit 8th in the Ryman League table, writes Tom Wardle.
Stephen Taylor dropped into right back replacing Jackson Ramm whilst Joel Potter was making his debut on the left. With an injured Ollie Ebbage missing, Lewis Sturman come in to partner Michael Sommerfield in central defence. Seamus Kelleher was replaced by another debutant Tom Cullumbine. Ben Jones also came in for Jamie Forshaw as three former Norwich United players started.
The Yachtsmen started the game with a lot of intent as they pushed Tilbury back into their own half straight from kick off. However in the first 20 minutes neither team managed to impose too much of themselves within the game. 5 minutes into the game Tom Cullumbine’s touch was heavy as he tried to progress into the box on the left hand side, but the ball was cleared up the field by Connor Mead. Tom Cullumbine then saw a spirited run down the right hand side and an attempted cross into the box, but the ball was blocked and put out for a corner.
On the 20th minute, a brilliant through ball from Jordan King was met by Nick Davey who was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. However, David Hinton’s free kick just curled out for a goal kick to Tilbury. The incident that led to the opening goal was 7 minutes later. Nick Davey received the ball on the edge of the area before laying the ball into the path of David Hinton to make a darting run into the box. Hinton was then fouled which was adjudged to be a penalty to Wroxham. With Saturday's penalty taker missing, Jack Garrod stepped up and made no mistake as he placed the ball in the top right hand corner of the net from the spot to give Wroxham a deserved 1-0 lead.
The goal seemed to wake Tilbury up a bit as the away side saw a couple of chances go close. Regan Mead saw his shot from the edge of the area drift wide narrowly missing the bottom left corner. 2 minutes later Mead was involved again as his shot from close range was blocked brilliantly by Joel Potter on his debut.
In the 34th minute, Wroxham extended their lead. Tom Cullumbine’s fantastic forward run resulted with a pass across to Nick Davey who was lurking on the edge of the area. Davey then took a touch and smashed the ball past Clarke Bogard and into the back of the Tilbury net to double Wroxham’s advantage before the break.
One minute later, Elliot Pride was called into action for the Yachtsmen as Greg Cundle saw his shot deflected awkwardly before Pride was able to take hold of the ball.
Tilbury started the second half well showing why they currently sit 8th in the league table. Greg Cundle saw his volley from the edge of the area saved by Pride down to his right. However, Tilbury got back into the game as their captain Jack Carlile smashed a free kick from the edge of the box into the top right hand corner of the Wroxham net within 5 minutes of the start of the second half. The home side responded well to this setback as Michael Sommerfield saw his shot following a corner brilliantly blocked on the line before eventually getting cleared. Tom Cullumbine then showed some very good play on the left hand side end with a cross which was caught comfortably by the Tilbury goalkeeper.
A few minutes later the ball fell kindly for the hard-working Nick Davey on the edge of the box before the forward rifled the ball towards the goal. Unfortunately for the striker, the ball went agonisingly close as it smashed against the top of the crossbar. Ben Jones then saw his shot from the centre of the box well saved to the right by Clarke Bogard.
In the 61st minute, after a good spell of pressure from Wroxham, Greg Cundle drew the visitors' level. He found space on the edge of the Yachtsmen’s penalty area before curling the ball in with the help of the left post to make it 2-2.
Straight after the goal Cullumbine saw his shot from the edge of the box brilliantly saved from Bogard. Gavin Lemmon then replaced Jordan King as Wroxham hoped to get a goal to go on and gain the 3 points. Lemmon sat in front of the back four allowing Hinton to push a bit further up. In the 75th minute David Hinton whipped in a free kick from the right hand side, as the ball very nearly crept in at the back post and forced a great save from Bogard once again. A few minutes later, Nick Davey’s pass to Tom Cullumbine left the Wroxham winger 1v1 with Bogard, but Cullumbine’s shot was straight at Bogard and the keeper palmed away the shot to safety.
As time appeared to be running out, Wroxham had 1 more chance to get the winner. A cross from the right hand side was met by the head of the impressive Nick Davey as his run to the back post had left him unmarked and he was able to head home past Bogard and give Wroxham a well-deserved 3 points.
Following a period of over 4 months without a League victory, the Yachtsmen have produced two performances and gained maximum points twice in a week. With some fresh blood introduced to the side including players who haven't played at this level, Manager Damian Hilton has given the club a major boost in its attempt to prevent relegation. The Yachtsmen now sit one place and two points outside the dropzone with still two games in hand. Saturday's game away at promotion chasing AFC Hornchurch will be a stern test for Hilton's side as they try to make it three from three.
